69 armco gas tank stencil
« on: March 04, 2012, 05:57:06 PM »
Does anyone have knowledge of a stencil that was applied to the gas tank with the word armco on it and if so was it on the tank bottom or top where it was not visible.

I remember reading an article a while ago about it. The name was applied to the sheets of steel that were eventually used to make the tanks. So the position can be random.
I can't say I have ever seen one on an original tank yet.

The American Rolling Mill Company would have stenciled its roll steel, but that would have faded away in the weather, which explains why it wouldn't show up on original tanks. Heartbeat City sells the stencil.

If it's not there, I wouldn't put it on.

I agree. If you see one, that's a mill marking (along with a heat number) on the coil stock from the rolling mill, and you wouldn't see it on every tank half blanked and drawn from a given coil.

I was trying to think of how often it would be on the coil stock. I'd assume just on the start, but we never had stock that big come into our plant, so I don't know for sure.

Yes. I've seen stencils like that on all kinds of parts that came in galvanized and then were (die)stamped.
