69 L78 Question
« on: February 19, 2012, 11:33:39 PM »
From what I see on the homepage information; it looks as though the 1967 & 1968 L78 was only available with a manual trans but in 1969 it was available with a auto trans. I know that in 1970 the L78 was manual only trans, so if I'm reading this all correct can anyone answer why the turbo 400 was only used in 69 on the L78?  A L78 auto must be kind of rare if it was only used in 69. Makes me wonder if a auto trans had a hard time living behind the L78 to use it in 69 but not in 70.

I'm not sure where you're getting your information from, but according to the 1970-1975 CBTN, the L78 was available with the Turbo 400 in 1970 on the Camaro, Nova and Chevelle.

Engine codes for the 70 Camaro L78 with the Turbo 400 were CJL and CTY. HERE'S a great thread (although somewhat old, so none of the pictures show up), regarding the "27 out of 600" L78's with the Turbo 400.

69 camaro L78,s came with the CX 400 turbo with also came on the ZL1,s. I have a 69 with the original CX 400 and it is a blast drive with 355 gears. It shifts like nothing I have driven. A previous owner rebuilt it in the 90,s and said it was stock. Other owners back to the seventies all said it was always that way although my owner history stops in 77.

Thanks Ed that makes more since. I knew that they made 427 turbo 400 cars and it seemed weird that L78 cars wouldn't come a auto trans.

I don't follow 2nd gens but I am aware of controversy concerning the '70 L78/auto. I don't believe a documented original is known to exist.

on NastyZ28.com  they give an example under engine code stamping numbers......T0830CTY - (T = Tonawanda, 08 = August, 30 = 30th day, CTY = 1970 396 Camaro, 375 hp, 11.0:1, TH400).......kinda funny won't you say

I guess I am part of that so called controversy. A guy in the sacramento Camaro club that keeps pretty much to himself has a 70 L78 T400 Camaro with build sheet etc. He worships 70's only and has a few of them. He used to bring a folder with paperwork to club meetings . Others have seen his paperwork on the L78 car and say it is real.  Since a Nasty Z28 member has insisted it's not real etc he has dug his heels in and basically told everyone to pound sand. I still have a standing offer to to bet 5ooo.oo that the car and paperwork are real. Nobody seems convinced enough that it is not real to take me up on the bet.

Off this topic, but I made a similar bet to the guy at HBC about his 68 Z28 radiator tag being correct.
