Can anyone tell me if this fender is real or reproduction ?
« on: November 09, 2011, 04:18:55 AM »
Hi

I was told that the fenders on my 69 Camaro may be reproduction based on the screw tabs in the photo

is this true?  how can i tell for sure?

the reason for this is because there are no associated screw tabs to match against them on the grille

ANY advice here is welcome

You may have scored Rally Sport fenders? but I'll leave that to the guys in the "know"
Good luck

Thanks,

you know i hadn't thought about that

my car is a Z28 with standard grille

it was made in Los Angeles in May of 1969, so anything is possible

Those are not RS fenders, the RS extensions are much larger.  In order to find out whether they are repro, you need to look at the nutserts that hold the hood hinge on.  repros are just flat metal with a hole and a nuts welded on the inside.  factory fenders had a square nut attached in a recess.

this clears up a lot

so let me ask my dumbass question if you will ?

would that explain a 1/2" gap on either side of the standard grille i have on my car?

meaning, is the standard grille not as wide as the RS grille?

What I am thinking is to change the fenders then to a set designed for a standard grille?

I dont know if my Z was a RS when it was born or not, but changing the fenders before we paint the car sounds like a less expensive, and probably more accurate representative of what the car should be

Those tabs are for the headlight buckets, not the grille.
Here is a pic of an original GM fender. Notice the double sheet metal at the tabs.
If yours does not look like this, I would assume repro.

were there different fenders for RS vs Standard? or just the Grille?

the problem with my car is that there is a 1/2" gap on both sides of the grille inside the nose of the car

Im trying to determine if it is the grille or the fenders

Put the grille back in and take a picture . your fender is for standard grille and looks damaged on the top corner . This is a RS fender .

Here's how the grille should look seated in the fenders.

I've read in another thread about the hinge bolt area. Could somebody post a picture?

"the threaded holes for the hood hinge etc. are rectangular nuts pressed into the holes. They are "T" shaped so they won't pull through"

That's what I read in another thread.

Ok Mr Frost Camaro,  I tried to take some pix of the captive nuts on the fenders, but I have both an OEM and Repro fender extension which was easier, and the type nuts used are the same as for the fenders.
OEM nuts, from outside and inside (square holes in fender):
Repro parts nuts, from outside and inside (round hole in fender):
