Hey of corse you see the cowl induction hood on the pace cars madatory, and I know you could get them on ss cars or you could opt for it on a z/28. BUT could you order say a 1969 camaor with a 307 with the cowl hood. You could get a 6 cylinder Rally sport, right? so why couldn't you get the special hood with any V-8?

It was only an option on SS and Z28 but all COPO and Pace cars got'em. Here's the link about half way down the page.
Now on the why part I have no idea why you couldn't get one on a 307 except some parts are exclusive to certain cars.

That is the correct link. You'll find the information 1/2 way down the page, under; Cowl Hood (ZL2)...Here is what is written;

Cowl hood (ZL2): The cowl hood was an option on SS and Z28 models in 1969 and was included on all COPO's and Pace Cars. It was introduced midyear 69. #1 ZL1, built 12E at Norwood is one of the first Camaros to have a factory ZL2 hood. A late December LOS-built Z28 with ZL2 has also been documented.

The ZL2 option included a solenoid and flapper in the hood. The wiring for the solenoid was routed through a special hole in firewall above the fuseblock. Only 10,026 cars received cowl hoods in 69 and about half of those went to COPO's and Pace Cars, meaning there were only 5,000 Z28's and SS's (out of about 20,000 Z28's and 30,000 non-Pacer SS's) that received the cowl hood.

your right, thanks for pointing out the obvious, twice! So for the SS cars the SS hood came with the SS option, but the cowl hood was an upgrade? also, on a properly working cowl hood, does the flap flip all the way down giving a 2 inch opening when the throttle is depressed 80%?

You would require an engine combination that had a 4 barrell carb to mate up with the air cleaner. That would eliminate any base engine vehicles.

oh I thought you could still get the 327 with a 4 barrel, i see your point. What about how much the flap opens, do you know that?

The flap will (supposed to) open all the way. Wink

The 2-barrell 327 and the 4-barrell LM-1 350 were gone before the ZL-2 hood was available so you had to have one of the other available HP options to get it.

What about how much the flap opens, do you know that?

It's a simple device - when the switch on the throttle arm closes, it triggers the relay, the solenoid is energized, and opens the flapper valve fully; there are no intermediate positions - it's either open or closed.

ok when the solenoid opens the flapper all the way, how much has the flapper opened? I don't think iti drops all the way down to where there is a full 2" port for cool air to come in right?

It rotates 90 degrees on a center pivot, its vetical whan closed, horizontal when open.  The width of the flapper an the solenoid body are the only things blocking the airflow when its open.

well maybe mine doesn't open far enough then, or the solenoid is partially frozen. I see the flapper function when I am driving, but doesn't seem to open a lot.  When I have the car parked with the hood open I can reach my hand where the flapper is and it only seems to open like a max of 1 inch. Does this seem about the same on your guys cars?

Aftermarket repro or original GM actuator solenoid?  The aftermarket stuff is never great. I had an aftermarket one that did not work well so I bought a used GM piece on Ebay and that one works great. You need to search for an actuator off a C3 Corvette as they are the same GM part number but you don't have to pay the '69 Z/28 added markup tax. Wink

you may need to adjust the actuator position in the flapper so it can open the flapper all the way when it's fully extended
