I'm looking to purchase an a.i.r. pump for my 69 Z28. From the research I've done I looked for a 7801149 pump. I located a pump, it,s a June of 1969 date has the white fan, but isn't stamped with the 7801149 on the back, it does have the number 780650 behind the white fan and isn't a restamp pump. The pump comes from a reputable seller and he says that not all pumps had that 1149 number stamped on the back. The reason he's thinks that is because he has other pumps without that number that are original and unrestored. Whats do you guys think?

I want to add , he says there is a date cast into the pump under the white fan.

I'm still at a loss as to why the back isn't stamped 7801149. I thought all pumps were stamped with this number.

It's not a stamped number. It's the casting number for the rear housing.
I've not seen one without the casting number, fwiw.

I'm not sure what I should do Kurt, Did Chevorlet put use the same pump in all models in 1969? Should I even be concerned that the numbers not cast in back?

There were different pump assemblies for some applications (and the part number for the assembly doesn't appear anywhere on the pump), but an original pump will have the 7801149 casting number on the rear housing; if that casting number isn't present, it's probably a later Service replacement pump.

Thanks for the insight Kurt and John. I just pulled off the black plastic fan on my original 1974 pump and it does have the number 7805650 and "74" cast into the housing and also has 7801149 on the back cover. The pump I'm looking at does appear to have the have the original housing. Is it possible the back just didn't have 7801149 cast into it (maybe it came from a different parts supplier), or do you think it was changed?

Be aware that the "149" casting number AIR pump is not rare or unique. That casting is used for a number of years and on several different product lines. For example, a 73 Buick or Cadddy would use the same AIR pump casting with the "149" on the back but the pump housing is machined differently so it will not bolt up to a 69 Chevy.

Mark, How would you know that a 7801149 pump is correct or not for a 69 Z28. I know they have the deep grooved pulley, but if it didn't have the pulley are there other numbers on it? Does the date code help?

All Chevy V8 AIR pumps had the same configuration. Not much different but the pulley and the diverter valve.
Some of the other GM lines had the diverter valve mounted on the bulge on the side of the pump.

And 7801149 is just the cast # for one piece of the pump. Not the whole assembly.

The AIR pumps used on Buicks and Caddys etc. all look very simmilar to the Chevy AIR pump and use the same "149" iron cast end cap. I used to scavenge the boneyards looking for smog stuff. Many Chevys had the smog removed early on but the GM luxury models seemed to have a better chance of keeping the smog system intact even after all these years. Some small parts, check valves and pieces of the system will interchange but not all. The AIR pump housings in particular have the "through" holes and "tapped" holes in different places from brand to brand so they look right at first glance but Caddy pumps will not actually bolt up to a Chevy.
