console gauge car or not?
« on: August 14, 2011, 04:00:20 PM »
I'm in the process of restoring a 67 ss350 and was looking for clues on whether or not it originally had console gauges. The interior was almost completely stripped when I got the car.trim tag says it had a console but its gone as is the speedo/tach. I be heard there should be a small hole in the firewall behind the distributor are but my firewall has been "hammered" back to make more room for a modern distributor. I can see a hole that was punched halfway out, but it looks like it may have closed during the "hammering". Any other clues to look for??

Kelvin - you might want to start by looking at your AIM (U17 A1 & A2). I don't have this option but here's the AIM for a 69. Both A1 & A2 will give you some clues.

The under-dash wiring harness differs between the console gauge cars and the "idiot light" version. You can compare the two by looking at the various catalogs or at a wire vendor like AAW...http://www.americanautowire.com/

Not sure if you have a harness in your car to look at?

Not necessarily, only known RPO's are listed in the above link. However, if Kelvin's car came with the U17 option would it be on his tag?

BTW, thanks for pointing this out...had no idea.

True Marty it may have had a console but not the gauge package.
Is it true of 67 as it is with 68's that the OIL idiot light bezel was changed to read FUEL?

That may be you only clue left Kelvin that it at one time did have factory gauges.

But then again someone could have added factory gauges after the fact and not changed out the bezel.

What was the status of the original wiring harness?

The existance of rusty riv-nuts are usually an indication, as well... ;-)  The rear ones, not the auto shifter's.

67 RSS, I do have the original harness to the car n I believe they may be unaltered, but right now their in a spaghetti like mess in a barrel. There's ALOT of wiring on a rs/ss w/ air and deluxe int!!! Im dreading untangling it all but that should tell me. Could anyone post what the harness w/ the gauges would look like. When I got the car, the Speedo was replaced with a '68 cluster with the fuel on it, so that may also be a clue. IZRSS, thanks for the diagrams that will be helpful. FLYINGSKIBIKER, there was some rivets at the front of the tunnel where the front of the console would have been. Is that the ar your speaking of?

Does it have the original engine?  Gauge cars used a different temp sender unit and you'd have the small brass oil pressure fitting and plastic hose on the top rear of the block.  The temp sending unit for gauges has a connector that sort of resembles the head of a common nail, while the unit for indicator light is a blade type connector.  Looks like this:

http://www.rickscamaros.com/catalogsearch/result/?search_year=1967&q=console+wiring&x=32&y=12

The 67 console underdash wiring is p/n 71286- 70648 is without. Compare the pics.. Or..you can buy a jumper harness (I didn't look that one up) to add to the original idiot lite harness which would confirm in the future that it likely had no gauges (if anyone were too look and research).

If the car had a console you can see it on the trim tag (G)- looks like you confirmed that below... No way to know (via trim tag) if it had gauge package however- at least in my opinion.

So....add the gauges at your leisure if you wish!

As far as mounting the console to the floor, there will be two holes ahead of the shifter location for a bracket.  Then, there will be one riv-nut about 18 inches back from the two holes and one about 30 inches back.  You can check the aftermarket places for pictures of the bracket and riv-nuts.  But the AIM has it all.

If you are assembling the car and didn't take it appart, I would highly recommend the AIM, Body by Fisher, Chassis Service Manual, and Chassis Overhaul Manual.  They are invaluable!
