1967 & 1968 Factory Air Conditioning Control
« on: June 27, 2011, 02:54:27 AM »
I'm working in a 1968 Camaro with factory AC. I need to find a heater air conditioning control.

Ii appears that 1967 controls are different and there appear to be two types of these, early and late. The late seem to coincide with the introduction of the Firebird. The 1968 controls appear to be all the same for the whole year. Does anyone know the differences in these controls and what I might have to pay for a 1968? From what I have found these are in short supply and expensive.

Very early 68 lenses were different than later 68 lenses. Although the AIM states (RPO C60, Sheet E3, Note 2) that the lens drawing was revised on September 9th, 1967, it appears the change didn't actually take place until sometime in early to mid October 1967. The first car I have in the database with the new lens is a 10B car.

Here are the differences:

Thanks Ed,

I believe the early 1968 is the same as the late 1967 except for the additional fibre optic cable. What do you think?

I also believe that there are two designs for 1967. Or is the late design actually Firebird. Is the Firebird a different colour lens in 1967 or 1968? What do you think? Many years ago (25+) I srounged around in autowreckers for AC parts for my wife's 1967 convertible and ran across all kinds of combinations of parts but I can't remember now what the combinations were. I've still got lots of parts but figuring out what goes with what is tough now.

One of the early 1967 controls I have has part # 7300764 with 0767 2 on it. The surround is black. The late 1967 type I have is the same part number with 0767 3 on it. It has more of a grey/black surround. Any comments on these differences?

I have pictures of all three and I can post them but they are above the 150KB resolution and I'll have to reduce them somehow.

Blake

The late 67 AC Control lens is a little different than the early 68 lens. I don't have a lot of info on the 67's, but I believe the Firebird was also different. The 67 AIM doesn't show any changes to either the standard heater control or the heater/ac control, so it appears it was the same througout production. However, I'll see what Daniel and Troy have to say. They're more in tune with the 67's than I am.

The numbers you found on the controls are probably casting numbers for the bezels, but send me the pictures and let me see what you have.

Not a great picture, but here's a late 67 AC control (07B) and the drawing from the AIM.

Edit: I also found an early 67 AC control (10E) and it's the same, so unless the VERY early controls were different, they stayed the same throughout production.

Thanks for the additional information.

I've got pictures of the three types of controls that I've found from the top, bottom and front. Two are 1967 and one is 1968. What is the best way to send these to you?

The controls did change in 67, but not what you can see without taking it apart.  I know the early 67 A/C had a switch off of the top slide bar to turn on the compressor.  Later they got rid of the switch and did it another way.  I don't koow anything about the 68 controls.
You can send me the pictures also.

Daniel, that was the only change I could find in the AIM.

C60, sheet E3, note 7 from February 1st, 1967 "3891796 Switch Removed". I'm assuming the front lens wouldn't change because of that though.

Thanks both of you for the information.

I've got to go out in a few minutes to my daughters softball game so I'll likely not be able to send you the pictures until tomorrow.

I believe the early 1967 control had the vacuum electric switch mounted on the control and the late 1967 and 1968s had the electric switch mounted on the crossbar. I don't think the Firebird ever had the early vacuum switch. The vacuum switch is the same as a full size car and I found a few of them in the autowreckers over the years for my wife's car. They are really problematic because the rubber part of the switch dries out and fails. Classic Industries used to sell this rubber part. It is removable and simple to change. The later design also had changes to the air box under the dash. I can't remember which one had the electric switch on top of the box that was contacted by a cam when one of the levers was moved. At one time I knew all about this stuff but I haven't had to work on it for so many years.
