White paint on 68 cowl tag
« on: February 03, 2011, 09:28:38 AM »
Can anyone tell me why the cowl tag and surrounding firewall area on my 1968 is painted white? it looks like it was built like this, not painted later. It is a Sept.built black convertible SS if it matters.

That's an early car. Many 67's had their TT sprayed white, wonder if it was an "old Habits die hard thing"?

What's your VIN? I'll look in the database and see if there are any other cars near yours with white trim tags.

And yes, please post a picture.

More info on the car,09C build date,PNT A2,Tr 719,BDY 68-12467NOR11365,VIN 124678N311787.The car is in bad but saveable condition, has P/S,P/T,P/W,gauges,tilt,correctly dated 4 bolt 323 block 069 intake, and high red line tach.Missing heads carb, pulleys, ect.I know that it looks like it could be an L 78 but who knows? It's been off the road and taken apart for 20+ years.I don't know what the white paint is about,I've heard about it on 67's before but have never been told why it was done,I have mainly owned 69's in the past so I know very little about 67 and 68 cars but would like to learn more about them.Thank you,Andy.

Nice A Black 68...
Is the high Redline Tach original to the car?
Do you know if the rear may be original?
If so do u have the date codes and assembly stampings handy to post?

I looked at the rear end and found the following, casting# 3894860 NF,date I 15 7,stamping BS 09 18 G2 E.The tach is faded and it looks like there was a sticker on the top that has fallen off,the printed circuit has an ink stamp on it that does'nt look like a date to me.I don't see anything that makes me think that the tach has been changed,I wish the printed circuit had a date that could prove something to me,if someone else knows how to read it I'll post the info later for them. The gauge housing matches the rest of the interior for color and patina and the harness is a factory one not a conversion one.Is there anything else to look for?So back to the original question, does anyone know why the white paint was on the firewall ?

Yep, there are cars with white tags in your date range, but what's strange is that there are tags in your date range with black tags. We're not sure why this was done, but I'm sure there was a reason.

BS = 3.31 Positraction
Special order rear, maybe it was a highway car,
As a conv the L78 4 spd makes sense especially considering all the other options one would have thought a person would have ordered A/C or an AUTOMATIC at bare minimum.
Running the numbers a L78, M20 (with it's 2.52 first), 3.31 actually would not have been a bad combo.

I would love to have a black 68 L78 Conv equipped as such.

There was a Lemans Blue Black dlx 68 L34 Auto AC PT PS PB PW car in the southeast about 25 years ago.

A couple examples I took pics of at the Lambrecht Chevrolet, Pierce, Nebraska Sale!  Just interesting seeing different vehicles with it.

This topic has been discussed a lot. Do a search and you will find several threads on it.
This one in particular seems to make it clearer. http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=10038.0
and http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=4727.0

As for '67 I can see it may have been done as a visual aid on a fast moving assembly line because many option codes were stamped on the tag.
Not sure why it was continued in early '68 but my guess would be the workers didn't realize this ad-hoc step was not necessary anymore because no options were listed to reference.

it may have been some type of inspection mark

if they had some type of problem, then put a special inspection on it, then had the inspector spray the tag after he inspected for that problem

I have seen it on other cars not only Camaro
