67 and 68 Grill rivets
« on: November 27, 2010, 06:37:39 PM »
I purchased a new grill kit for my 68 RS. It comes in three sections that have to be riveted together. An upper, middle and lower. The correct "flat" rivets came in the kit.

Question is what tool do I need to install these "flat-head" rivets? They are not the standard "pop" type rivets..which I have used before and have the tool for.
The "flat-head" rivets are apparently the correct ones...although the standard "pop" rivets will work.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks Paul,

all of these are usefull and informative links.

Unfortunately, they don't have muc in the way of identifying the tool that is needed to install the correct rivets.

I have the correct rivets...just no tool.

Any additional help in locating the install tool would be welcome.

Thanks again.

Try over on TC. Someone had a picture of the tool and was putting the pieces together if you sent them to him.

I riveted the headlight door trim to doors by hand with a series of punches and drifts against an anvil with some original tubular rivets purchased on epay (with an old typewritten note they were from the the Norwood line). Didn't know AMK carried replacements- great CRG research article above on the 67/68 Grille- first I read it.

Anyway haven't had to rivet a grille and associated moldings by hand would appear impossible without a tool (I have an NOS set that needs to be done some day)...found the 2002 TC post with ref to browntool. Looks like this is the best tool for $220...

That's the tool Lane, nice job!    :)

There's a cheaper version at Northern Tool...  http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200451729_200451729#

I recently bought a MUCH cheaper hand rivet tool (53-82 Aero-Rivet Tool, P/N TL-165) from Zip-Corvette for $79.95.  Instead of being a squeeze tool, it has a nut that must be turned with a wrench or socket...a little extra work, but the price was right.  I haven't tried it out yet.  Here is the link:

Bowtie68iho,

I know this is an old thread but I am going to install a new grill soon and will need a tool to set the correct rivets. Before I bought one I wanted to ask how did this tool worked for you?
If it worked fine and you have no need for it anymore would you be willing to sell it?

Thanks,
Mike
