124377N230691 on the Yenko vin list
« on: September 23, 2010, 09:58:28 PM »
Looking for info on my 67 L78 camaro vin #124377N230691. It is on the Yenko vin list but with no YS#. Have gathered a lot of info in the past five months of searching but am stuck on the owner history with a guy named Clyde Ranck in Consh. PA. He is as far back as I can get. I know other but don't want say their names online but will ina PM to me.
I know for a fact it was shipped to Jackshaw Chevrolet in Euclid, OH.. Have not had any luck in my Cleveland search. Have talked to a couple Pontiac guys that got me straight on the Jackshaw dealer story. They sold out about 12 years ago.
Its Yenko story- Warren D. does not have any record of it either on the floor plan or conv. records. It does not have the dash after the 4K meaning it was a fleet order. Seems as if all the located cars do have the dash after the 4K.
Whether it was sold through Yenko or Jackshaw or whoever I just want to try to get to bottom of it. Could talk forever guess I'll shut now got a soccer game to go to.

Not all the 67 Yenkos have the dash but most do.

Have you had any luck getting the NICB?

Thanks for your reply JoeC. Do you or oneone else know of someone I could talk to in the Philly, PA. area about camaros? Seems to me like thats where it spent its life before I bought it. All the previous owners I know are from that area back to the mid 80's.

That is very interesting if your NICB comes back to Jackshaw Chevrolet. Yenko sent a list of 107 1967 Camaro vins to NHRA when trying to get them to approve the 1968 Yenko 427 Super Camaro. From what I can tell, only about half of them are real 427 Yenko Camaros but was thought that the rest were at least Yenko sold Camaros.

Joe do you think maybe the Yenko folks somehow knew the vins of several L78 cars and kinda stretched the truth to NHRA. But if that was the case why wouldn't there be a lot more vins on the list like mine with no YS#. I've said in the past and will say again just because it was shipped to Jackshaw doesn't mean it was sold there.Need the owner history!!!

I am not sure how Yenko came up with that NHRA list. it is missing some documented 427 Yenko's and some cars found on the list were not 427 and don't have YS numbers. I think Don padded the list in the process of doing his job which was to get the 68 427 Yenko's approved for NHRA Super Stock. The 67 and 68 427 Yenko was approved for AHRA Super Stock but not NHRA.

Jackshaw Chevrolet was not too far from Yenko. Did they have the same dealer zone code?

your vin shows up in the magazine aritcle posted on camaropacecars.com says ys 715 next to your vin I think in the article. Looks like some kind of fleet order starting w/ a late 226vin. Also looks like every time they ordered 3-5 of them the 1st couple in the group started w/ a fleet code after the dash like the pacecars. I guess it could be possilble that the fleet code was some type of option like 15inch wheels that yenko got from the factory or something but he ordered in bulk like 50 so it came w/ the fleet code on tag. If other dealers knew the order code maybe they could order an ss w/ whatever his came with and not go through him for one of his cars.  Where yours has no dash and fleet code, possibly because the dealer found a way to order just one on his own so no fleet code, there were like 5 yenko distributors on advertisements in 67 for yenkos in ohio but I don't see your dealer on there.   Maybe yenko got a list of all the SS's that got ordered w/ his options whether part of his fleet or not from chevy and later submitted it to nhra. Just a guess why yours doesn't come back to yenko or have invoices, but it does show the ys# on the other site. Good luck. Not all were converted 427s, some stayed 396s and even some were 427 hydraulic conversions w/ turbo 400s... ;D

Thanks 67BB for your reply. YS715 has been located, go to the Detroit Horespower site and look at the recent list of 67 Yenko vins and you'll see YS715. My vin is the only one on the list that does not have a YS#. How do you know who the OH. Yenko Supercar dealers were? I think tracing back the owner history is the only way I'm going to find out the real story about my car. Right now I'm at a standstill with Clyde Ranck of Conosh. PA. can't get past him. A friend of his said a guy named John Wood might know more but he does not know anything of his whereabouts.
As for the dash stuff i don't understand all that. Others have said not all 67 Yenko cars had it. Sure would like to get up with John Wood but I don't know where to start looking.

I don't see any vin lists on detroithorsepower, all I saw was your vin next to ys715 on the other site, and that was a picture of a magazine article listing them all. Here is a pic of a 67 advertisement w/ ohio dealers at the time. good luck in your search.

The list of Yenko dealers was always in flux. There's some 67 dealers that aren't on that list.
In OH, that includes Queen City Chev.

YS-715 is a black Yenko Camaro and is a known car.

Most of the found Yenkos have just the dash with no fleet code but some have the dash and the number and some have no dash or number.

Yenko had some cars drop shipped to St Louis rail yard for the Dick Harrell shop to convert but the NICB still comes back to Yenko Chevy.

This NICB comes back to Jackshaw Chevrolet so the car was probably shipped there and sold there.
Why it is on the Yenko 107 NHRA list and why it has a fleet code is a mystery but was probaly built around the same time as a batch of Yenko's cars. There are a bunch of red flags on the 107 NHRA list that show they were not all 427 converted Camaros. There may be more of them that were not even Yenko sold cars.

With only 1138 4K cars built, there were not many to go around and Yenko got about 50 so that may be another possible reason he had to do a special order. Also may have got a better price on them, which is somthing that Yenko always tried to do.

Since Harrell was key in converting them for Nickey in late 66 till may 67 when it looks like he did alot of conversions for yenko, it could be possible that the list of vins for nhra might have been assembled w/ his help. Meaning maybe he knew of other  potential 427 converted camaros for other dealers and they were trying to get as many on that list to get them qualified for a certain class. Joe do you know if he had an exclusive deal to only convert yenko fleets in may-july 67. Maybe he potentially tuned or converted others like this one for JackShaw concurrently ???  Joe does your sales invoices from Span list 15 inch wheels also? ;)

By the end of 1967 things were not going well with the Yenko/Harrell deal.
In 1968, Harrell moved to Kansas City, MO. to open a new Performance Center and worked with Fred Gibb Chevy.
In 67 Harrell was in St Louis.

There is a chance that your car ended up on the 107 NHRA list by simple typo mistake as this has happened with other Yenko lists.
We know that all 107 are not 427 cars so I don't think Don would have spent a lot of time trying to find 427 Camaros as some of his own 427s are not on the list.

Hard to say what happened so you need some luck that some other info will turn up on your car.

Some of the 67 Yenkos info shows 15 in wheel was an option and some were sold with 15s but I don't know if they were dealer install or factory install.
