Change 69 to 68 front disc brakes
« on: July 26, 2010, 05:12:14 PM »
My 68 has 69 front disc brakes. I want to change back to 68 calipers. Do I neet to change anything else to put the 68 brakes back stock?

i know the caliperr brkts are different. 69 uses a floating single piston caliper. 67/56 uses corvette style 4 piston calipers

Yes they are different! 69 has single piston and 68 is four piston caliper

Thanks. So If I get the brackets as well the calipers, they should work with the spindles and rotors I already have?

Hi,

It all depends on a couple of things.  Did your car originally have disc brakes, if not, where did the setup you have now come from.

Besides the main caliper brackets you may need more.

For a 68 dual piston caliper, a special rotor is required.
1) There's the original two piece.
2)  Repro (one piece) has more of a bevel on the hub part, allowing caliper clearance.
3) there is also a Repro two piece, I have no experience with that.

You will also need new brake hoses, if 4 piston calipers don't come with them, you will need short little hard lines and brackets that attach them to the calipers.  Single piston style calipers have a different hose.

You may need to replace the brake hose frame brackets if they were replaced.

Spindles depend on what you really have on your car.

Hope this helps a little.

thanks.  Car originally had disc brakes. 20 years ago when I didn't have any funds for maintenance, a mechanic convinced me the single piston calipers would be cheaper to maintain and less likely to leak. Since the 69's were readily available and the 68s weren't, he switched them.
