XCO car with KD1 [delete A.I.R.] and fan pulley question
« on: July 13, 2010, 03:30:26 PM »
Hi crew,
Given that my car is an XCO to Aust., I presume it would have automatically qualified for rpo KD1?
If that is so, then it would seem that they also leave the fan pulley [3900434] as-is and not change it to 3905995?
Mine still has the 3900434 pulley on it.
TIA

So, some more research on this indicates that AIR was only applicable to manual trans. , as indicated in upc 6 a10 and a11 of the 68 aim?
And in '67 was only applicable to CA cars?

Another point of confusion is the crank pulley p/n's
According to the L34/35 w/o smog pulley list, the crank pulley p/n for rpo n40 is different for rpo c60 and c60 + n40. In fact, n40 is the same p/n as base [single groove]

So the questions are, given that there is only one extension pulley, how was it fixed to a single groove crank pulley [n40 only] so that it lined up with the power steering pump pulley?
The aim [upc 6 a11] seems to indicated a 3 groove crank pulley arrangement for n40 w/o smog, with the middle groove not used.
There's also another oddity with the pulley list in that it shows the same crank p/n for w/o smog and w/ smog, when according to upc 6 a10, a 2 groove crank pulley is required for all configurations of rpo's w/ smog.

Another interesting observation is that on both upc6 a10 and a11, the pulley [groove] for the power steering pump is consistently drawn as being the same diameter as the crank pulley in n40 as compared to c60 + n40 which is drawn as smaller than the crank pulley.

Thoughts appreciated...

So, some more research on this indicates that AIR was only applicable to manual trans.
As has been pointed out to me, this is not entirely correct and is only applicable to small block. All big blocks were with AIR except exports.

The pulley list is making a bit more sense, as it seems that all the crank pulleys were at least double groove. At least this seems to be the case with L48.
My confusion came from the pictorial in UPC6 A11 [68 aim] which shows a single groove crank pulley for base w/o air.

There's an argument that export bb which qualify for KD1 [delete air] would have kept the double/triple groove water pump pulley, as KD1 perhaps only specified items directly related to AIR removal and not the water pump pulley.

This is somewhat confirmed on UPC KD1 A2 which quotes:
6K-2 Water pump and drive.....
V8 [396] assembles the same as RPO's L34 - L35 & L78

However, this assumption seems contradictory to the pulley list, which has a 'L34/35 w/o smog' list and quotes the single groove water pump pulley.
This would suggest that KD1 did specify a change of water pump pulley, as L34/35 w/o smog can only be applicable to exports.
