LOS CARS???
« on: September 16, 2009, 03:48:43 AM »
I am looking into restoring a car built in LOS and I am having a hard time finding out what type of car it was when it came off the factory floor. How do you find out what kind of car (ss, ss/rs and motor 302, 327 350, ect) was built in LOS? The numbers on the cowl tag are 12437LOSvin#.

I have already figured out the the car should have the glacier blue paint (53) with a vinyl roof (B). Does the B mean Black vinyl and if so what color should the stripes be? Black?

The car currently does not have a vinyl roof but does have the chrome around the roof and I have been able to find 3 of the previous owners and all of them say that is how it came from the factory. Could a car come from the factory with the chrome trim but no vinyl just a painted roof?

Finally I have heard also that more of the "special order" cars were built in LOS is that true?

Sorry some of the these questions are basic but, that is why I am a NEWBIE!! Thanks ???

ps The car has 120 mph speedo 8000 rpm tac, and muncie 4 speed

Lots of items that could determine what a car might be, could have been added on at later dates.  Without paper work it's hard to do so conclusively, but many things put together can point in a direction.  The more info you can provide, the easier it is to rule things out or in.  Does it have the original engine, transmission, rear end etc?  The codes off the engine could tell you what the car was if it has the same partial vin as the car.  Such as a DZ suffix on a stamp pad being a 302 and that would mean Z28 etc.  Lots of people on here know what goes together and what that means, so give as much info as you can.

What year is it, and what's the full VIN? Can you post a photo of the cowl tag above the master cylinder?

The car is a 1969 camaro. I will get the vin and numbers off of the cowl tag and post them later today maybe tomorrow. The muncie 4 speed is m20 that is orig to the car along with the 120 mph and 8000 tac. It does has a 10 bolt rear end which is not orig and the motor is a 350 not orig to the car.

Can you post a photo of the tag? There is a cowl tag decoding download available on this site at: http://www.camaros.org/decoder/publicdecoder_v368.zip

So it originally was a 2-tone car (not 53-B). Not common.
Still painted the original 2-tone colors?

What's the stamped #'s off of the Muncie? They will be on the passenger side of the case.

1 = Chevrolet
2 = Camaro
4 = 8-cylinder engine
37 = coupe body
9 = 1969 model year
L = Los Angeles, CA assembly plant (Van Nuys)
502192 = vehicle serial number sequence

Decode for body number: 125678

09D = Built the Fourth week of September.
69-12437 = Coupe.
LOS = Built in Van Nuys California.
715 = Standard Dark Blue Bucket Seats.
53-50 = Lower Color is Glacier Blue and the Top Color is Dover White.
Z241 = internal plant scheduling code.

Since it is a Van Nuys built 69 it must be an Spet of 68 build ...

Kurt .. I don't think there was an 8K tach available in sept of 68  was there ? My early (Jan) Van Nuys Z has a 7k tach and my March VN Z has an 8k tach....

69 Van Nuys car drop the tank and see if there is a build sheet
