Decode help- steer box/ pitman arm
« on: August 24, 2009, 08:33:32 PM »

Trying to verify parts, we plan to sell off our 25,000 mile road race Camaro.  Can anyone give me idea of fair market value, and application?

1.  Manual Steer Box- #5696084  1  Date 339 (Feb 2, 1969 I believe)

2. Pitman Arm-   7 GMT #3908391A  5.75"  (FAST STEER I believe)

Thanks for any advise or help!

Paul,

I looked at this site, it only tells me that all manual case casting numbers are 5679142 regardless of ratio for Camaro.  The pitman arm number is the same except without the letter A.

But my numbers are not there.

Any ideas or did I miss something?

Thanks,

RD

Sorry to say it but that steering box is the slow steering unit used on some '67 Camaro applications. It has a fourth mounting ear on it on the top side which does not line up with any hole in the frame. The 339 date, I'm sure it the 339th day of 1966. The pitman arm is the one which was used for the 1967 model year. In all honesty, the box is not a desirable unit.

I have the same steering box, julian date of 163. The arm has the same number but has a GMT 15A   Would this be correct for a june or july camaro?
Also have a 5679142 box with assembly date i beleive of  A1817. Would either be correct for a 67  7B car.  first box has a 5.8 arm on it and the other has the 5.25 arm.  Would the 5.8 arm be correct for either.

Did you check the Julian date converter on the CRG site?  Off the top of my head 181 would be the end of June or early July.

How close should the box date be to build date? Does anybody have a July camaro with manual box?  Would the one with the 163 julian be right?

My assembly date was 131 and my car is an 05D (68) so I guess mine was 2 or 3 weeks before build date.

Both are 67 boxes. One would be 7 days and other would be 25 days before build date. I took the original box off years ago and traded with parts for a rear end i have. It was the 4 loc to loc box. I still have the special turn signal cancel cam.  I counted that and i remember there was no numbers on box top area, kind of plain. `Car still has all original steering componets too. I seen somewhere about the differences in arms and things. The one box with just the casting number and the 163 julian date is plain on the top and i kind of remember the extra bolt hole just being there. Not sure if this odd box was thought out the production year and if there has been some with the 4 loc to loc ratio.  The other box has the numbers that are on the site but is 7 days before car. I guess my goal would be to figure which box is right and then see about putting correct gutts in that one.   What started all this is a guy needs a box and i pulled them out and looked at what i had and never new they where close to date correct. One has original 67 arm on it to, 5.8 length. Which ever one i don't use i was going to give to him for free. So i want to pick correct one. Any help i appreciate!

http://www.camaros.org/suspen.shtml#steer
http://www.pozziracing.com/first_gen_suspension.htm

I don't know a lot of the steering info by heart. At one time I researched all this on my car because it had some different components than normal and I found that for a certain production run, they used left over 67 parts on 68 Camaros and mine was in this time frame and had those parts.  By memory, all the non-power steering boxes for the 68's were the same and the quick ratio for Z28's was achieved by shorter idler arms and the long pitman arm.  Hopefully someone that really knows will chime in.
