Radio code
« on: July 15, 2009, 12:06:37 AM »
I posted this question on the wrong forum, Originality/Ground straps in responce to 69x33rs question (What type of radio is this?) and pic of his '69 AM radio. :-[ Sorry.

I'll try this again.

The '69 AM radio in this post has the same service model number-91APB1, and product number-7307311 that mine has. The serial numbers however are quite different- 11PAS-8239 on his and 11PBR-1260 on mine. Is this simply a serial number, a code to tell the difference between single and dual speaker models or just a build date? Have I overlooked a decode list on this site?

Thanks
Al

91APB1

9 1969 model year
1 indicates the GM vehicle division: 1 = Chevrolet division. (2=Pontiac, 3=Oldsmobile,
A indicates the vehicle: "A-body". (mid-sized vehicle--Chevelle)
PB indicates the type of audio equipment: PB = AM pushbutton radio. (FP = AM/FM pushbutton, FM = AM/FM-stereo pushbutton, MP = Multiplex adapter, etc)
1 indicates this piece of audio equipment was apart of the first design run. This really isn't that important compared to the rest of the model number. If "2" had been the last digit, it would simply indicate Delco had made a change in the production of the same radio (such as an electronic circuit board revision) and it would have been apart of the second design run.

1969 chevrolet chevelle Am pushbutton 1st design run,(possibly an early 69 car or they only had one design the entire year)

I'm not sure about the serial number,but i dont think it is anything but a serial number.

Thanks for the info wagonman, but I am a little confused. Are you saying the radio I have is for a '69 Chevelle? It is from my 04 build Camaro that has been in the family since new. I guess April of '69 could be considered early given the longer run of '69s. Should it be 91FPB1 for an F body Camaro?

Never mind. GaryL just pointed me to the Delco number codes that show Chevelles and Camaros shared the same number.

91APB1

The first digit is the model year of the radio
0=1970. So 8=1968, 9=1969, 0=1970, 1=1971, 2=1972 3=1973, 4=1974, 5=1975

The second digit is the car line:
1 = Chevrolet
2 = Pontiac
3 = Oldsmobile
4 = Buick
5 = Cadillac
6 = GMC

The third element is a letter which corresponds to the fisher body style the radio goes in:
A - Midsized: Tempest, Chevelle, Camaro, ChevyII, Acadian, Skylark/GS, [GTO not listed by Delco but is a Tempest or LeMans, GT37, T-37 Pontiac model radio]
B - Fullsized model: Bonneville etc.
C - More than full sized: Cadillac Fleetwood.
D - Rear control: Cadillac 75
E - Toronado, Riviera
F - Pony car: Firebird etc.
G - Grand Prix etc.
H - Subcompact: Sunbird etc.
L - Opel
T - Truck
TTC - GMC truck tilt cab
V - Corvette, sometimes the V looks like a Y ?
X - Compact: Nova etc.
Z - Corvair etc.

The next two letters indicate the type of radio:9/B]
PB - Push Button AM
FP - AM/FM mono
FM - AM/FM~Stereo
K - Fader Control
MP - FM Multiplex adapter (second part of a two-piece radio)
T - Stereo Tape Player (8-track)

So,according to our data:

91APB1

1969 chevrolet midsized car ie: camaro or chevelle,AM pushbutton  1st design. why they classify the chevelle and camaro radio as the same i'm not sure.In 1969 is there any difference? i dont think there is.

Probably just different knobs. Can any '69 Chevelle owners concur?

It's just how they release the part. It was first released for Chevelle, so it got that code. Other carlines could also use it, but they wouldn't renumber it.
Al,
Could you show a picture of the back of the radio? There are two different designs and I can't remember which Camaro used....

Kurt,

Here it is. It's a little rusty, sat in the garage for many years while an aftermarket AM/FM 8 track took its place!

While we're on the subject, do you know if a '69 AM/FM would work with the rear antenna on my Camaro? I have a chance to pick one up but I'm not sure it would work. Maybe with an in-line signal booster?
