'68 396: Smog Diverter Valve "Broadcast code" question ??
« on: March 22, 2006, 05:59:18 PM »
I 've located an NOS diverter valve ...PN# 7036448.
...about these 'broadcast codes', ...I believe I need the "DG" for my car, ...but will an NOS unit have any code stamped on it? ...is the 'DG' implied by the part#? and/or if it's other than 'DG', ...can they be 're'-stamped?

...also curious on what others believe one of these valves would be worth NOS? (I know it's subjective, ...just curious).

  Thanks,
              Kevin

...by the way, ...if anyone has any '68 (396) smog parts for sale, ...I'm looking ...

Kevin,

That P/N (7036448) was used on all 68 Camaro 396 engines. It will be stamped 28299 and have the "DG" ink stamp on the end of the valve. NOS ones should also be ink stamped as shown in the picture below (it's an NOS valve)... As to what they're worth, it depends on supply and demand.

You might want to review this thread.  http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=396.0   The 7024764 has also been showing up on 396's.

Steve's correct. The 7024764 is shown in the AIM under the L35 engine option (page A7). The 7036448 came from my September, 1968 P&A 34, and may be the "replacement" because it states "68 ALL (396)".

7036448 actually replaced by 7028299 in May of 68.  I find it interesting that the part books (so far) don't show the 7024764 but it's in the AIM and it's what is on my original and unmolested 396 :)  I love stuff like this :D

Steve,

What was the application for the 7028299? I can't find that one in the P&A either.

Steve,

So... If I read this right:

The original valve for the 1968 396 was 7024764.

This was superceded in May of 1968 by 7028299.

This in turn was superceeded sometime before September, 1968 by 7036448.

Jeez... no wonder it's hard to restore these things!!

Almost.  I'm not sure the 7024764 number is the "original" number but that would be logical.  I think it could be one of several at this point.  There does not seem to be a supercede date for the 4764 to the 7028299 though but it obviously continued to be used past 5/68 in my case.

This gets further clouded by the fact that most service parts were catalogued with different part numbers than the original production part, due to the way they were packaged; a service diverter valve in a box with a gasket would carry a different part number than the identical production-line part. Also, many parts were consolidated to reduce the number of parts required for service - where three or four different part numbers of valves were released for production usage for different engines, in service, frequently one valve was catalogued as a "functional replacement" for those usages. It didn't LOOK the same as the original production part, but functionally, it did the job as a replacement.

Thanks for the replies (and link to the other thread).

OK, ...this is what I'm gathering ...

7024764 - original part# (called out in AIM)
  7028299 - "68 All (396)" replacement
  7036448 - "68 All (396)l" replacement, new# in May '68 timeframe

...as far as the 5 digit # stamped on the front/base of the Dvalve:

  7024764 - "24764"
  7028299 - "02899"
  7036448 - "02899" .... ??? (this was mentioned in this thread)

...now to add to this. In my quest to locate the diverter valve, ...people have been commenting, "oh, ..you need the "297" valve for BB, or the "295" valve for SB". (Forget the SB for now) ,...but with the "297" (I'm assuming this is the last three of the fiver digit stamp), ...what is that referring to?

  Again,  ...Thanks for the info.
...and for Kurt & company on this site, ...major kudos, ...since only here would we be able to discuss this level of detail, ...and fit in :)

The 295 (Small block) and 297 (Big block) are the last three digits for 1969 valve applications. Trying to locate a 69 "297" valve is running big money these days of the smog pump come back tour. Its like going to a surgeon and asking for an appendix transplant  :P

...Just want to follow up here...

I just received (in it's original box),  my NOS #7036448 Diverter valve (with the "DG") stamp, ...and the 5 digit number is "28299", ...which I was surprised to see since it reflects the prior PN (7028299).

...again, ...thanks for all the input  :)

Kevin

Regarding your 3/26/06 post.  I think it depends on your vehicle date compared to the part date that determines "replacement" (service) parts vs. original production parts that one might have on a car.   ???  By that I mean if a part was superceded during a cars production it was a new part showing up on the line and in the parts department as a service replacement for vehicles already out the door.  BTW, in your chart regarding the 5 digit #'s the 7028299 - should be "28299" and 7036448 would be "36448" I think.

It appears you got a "left over" 28299 packaged in a 7036448 box which may relate back to JohnZ 3/26 post :)
