bulbs in intrument cluster
« on: June 11, 2009, 08:28:54 PM »
I hate to be anal, but I noticed when looking at the 68 AIM, that there are 3 different kinds of bulbs and sockets listed for various functions in the instrument cluster.  Some are the push in 194's but two others are some kind of twist-in bulbs.  Problem is in my 68 chassis service manual, it shows only the 194 bulbs for all the cluster bulbs and none of the twist-in bulbs.  Oversight or am I missing something?  I have all push in sockets and wondered if anyone knew of a source for the twist-in sockets?

I believe the 194 bulbs go in the twist off sockets.  I found this web site with the parts. Just do a search and see what you come up with. It shows only the 194 bulbs.
It also showed to have three AC Delco sockets in stock.

Well, the problem is the AIM.  I shows 3 different sockets for both gauge and non gauge cars.  One gray for twist in bulbs, one black for twist in bulbs and one black for pinch bulbs.   The idiot light cars have 7 pinch bulbs and 3 twist in type bulbs.  The gauge car has 4 pinch and 4 twist in bulbs.  Just wondered if this was what really happened or just wishful thinking.

Yes, that would be very helpful.  I don't have a 67 AIM, but I do know that the part #'s are listed as the same for 68 and 67 bulbs.  I'm not in a real big hurry as I haven't swapped out my gauge pod one for the non gauge pod yet.

Gotta remember I am looking at the '67 Non guage cluster.. Printed circuit has number  6290070 PED - 1 and the cluster has number 6457863 on the back of it..
I see 2 gray round-topped socket holders (twist in) with bulb H 1816, there is a black twist-in round topped socket holder with bulb W 1445 there are  6 GE 194 push-in bulbs in black socket holders. These same 6 black socket holders have numbers on them such as: 2 and 7  and 14 and 02 and 7 and 10.  Gray and 1 black round holders are non-numbered..  Looks like I am missing a black socket holder number 7..
Hope this helps.. If you still need pics, I can get them but, numbers will be verryyy difficult to read..  I needed a flashlight to read the numbers on the bulbs..   One of the GE 194 bulbs has a chromium painted top on the bulb..
Again, this is from a non guage '67 ...

Yes, that confirms (at least the one you have) what the AIM says.  3 twist bulbs and 7 (probably one of the missing ones) pinch bulbs.  Thanks.  I guess I'll be on the hunt for these.
