1968 '302' fender badges...
« on: February 22, 2009, 09:23:09 PM »

Hi.. My '68 Z had the Z 2/8 style front fender badges on it when I got it more than 20 years ago. It is a 02D car and almost in the correct timeframe for them but I know it came with the '302' style makers new, since I have a picture of it 'back in the day' with those on it. I can fully understand why many would switch them as I too prefer the Z 2/8 style over just numbers since there was little else in the first couple of model years aside from the stripes (not easily seen from a side profile) to identify that model from others. As well the 302 an 307 marks could be easily missed from any distance obviously.
I am considering changing mine out for the original style if I don't have to deal with drilling new holes in the fenders or having holes from the present Z 2/8 style ones show under any 302 badges. (it would be nice to be able to switch back and forth occasionally depending on the situation for shows or cruising etc)...
Question - does the 302 style badging have pins on the back that line up or interchange with that of the Z 2/8 style ones if I decided to swap them?
Couldn't find any info in the AIM regarding this, although Z 2/8 specific info in there is very scarce and hard to find at the best of times... Thanks - Randy

Dutch -

The pins are different on the "302" and "Z/28" emblems.  Below are some photos of the pins on the "302" emblems.  You can compare them to your "Z/28" emblems.  Also the correct emblems (302 and Z/28) have different pins for the left side vs. the right side.

Paul

P.S. - Put the "302" emblems back on!   :)

Paul:

Thanks for the info - I suspected given the general shape of each type that they wouldn't share the same mounting points but was hopeful just the same that they might.
I would love to put the '302' ones on but it would mean filling holes and trying to match up paint done back in 1980 (which is still in good condition surprisingly) which isn't a practical expectation obviously. If I ever redo the paint at some point it will be the second thing I opt to change - the first being a color change back to the original seafrost green it was born with...

 Thanks - Randy

Dutch, as a second owner of a 68 Z back in 1971, which had the 302 emblems, I can relate to your story.  As soon as I bought the car I made a BLine down to my local chevy dealer to order Z28 emlems.  I even but them where they didn't belong.  The front grill and the rear panel.  I was 17 and wanted everyone to know that I had a Z.  I later wrecked the front end of the car and had to replace the grill, valance, and hood.  I had ordered a cowl hood but the dealer ordered and SS hood.  Being in a hurry to complete the car, I used the SS hood.

So if any off you out there have a Lemands Blue, white stripe,68 Camaro with 4  Z28 emblems and an SS hood, I still have the bill of sale which states the car is a "302" sport coupe.  Also, this might be one of the few cars I might work out a swap for my Z10.  I've regretted selling that car since 1974.

Kris, just look at the 'psychological damage' you obviously have caused the owners of that car since then..   they don't know whether they have a 'z28 or an SS, and furhtermore are confused about the year of it too..
...   OR perhaps they go to shows and try to convince the judges that their car is 'obviously' a special GM engineering prototype??    :)

Yea, I can really relate about the strange looks and/or FORD comments that sometimes pop up when someone looks under the hood and asks about the engine and ultimately can't quite get their head around a GM 302... Hell even some parts store guys often give me 'the look' and I have to really urge them to take the time and look into their listings when I'm trying to find something Z specific.
A few times I've walked away from getting into arguments with self appointed experts at cruises or shows when they proclaim that GM never had a 302 and what I have is a 307 or 350 sitting in there... or comments like "I had one exactly the same, but my Z 2/8 was an automatic with air conditioning"...

That 302 Ford thing has been happening to me for years. Now even the guys who have been around awhile are surprised by a Chevy 302. I once was trying to get a gasket kit for the 780 Holley. The guy says which one, there are two. Two, I said? Can't be. Finally looked at his book. It listed 1x4 BBL, and 2x4 BBL. I had to explain the difference to him, but got what I needed. Geesh!
