A.I.R. on 350/300 w/ auto trans
« on: September 27, 2008, 01:56:40 PM »
I am having my '69 RS/SS judged in a national AACA show for the first time. Where can I find factory documentation that my L-48 engine w/ auto trans. would not have the A.I.R. system. Thanks for any help.

Right in the Assembly Instruction Manual. Page A3 of the ZL2 [ducted hood section] shows the L48 engine used different air cleaners for manual and auto trans. Autos had the CCS system which used exhaust heat; manual trans cars used the AIR system which had the pump. Both systems are depicted in an original owners manual [yellow page insert] but it does not list applications.

Don't apply this to bb/auto which did use the AIR system.

Here's another avenue - if you go to the L-48 section, sheet A2 (non-illustrated parts) and look in UPC 6, item 6L (intake & exhaust manifolds & heat control) and 6T (air injection reactor equipment) carry the symbol for "assembles same as production", which refers to the base V-8 engine. Then go to section M35 (Powerglide), sheet A22, and it shows the base V-8 engine with the thermostatically-controlled air cleaner and exhaust manifold heat stove (no air injection system). If you have a THM-350, in section M-38, sheet A2, it shows that those items assemble the same as with M35.

Thanks Guys,
I spent about an hour this AM looking through the AIM, I just couldn't pin it down. This is just what I need.

Been there....done that...

The AACA doesn't get that detailed in their judging....they just look for correctness...

There is no friggin way these guys know that much about Camaros.....they just have a general knowledge of what a Chevrolet's back then should look like.

I made it all the way through Preservation without trying.....

It's a joke....IMHO

A lot of trouble for nothing.

Hi Billy, I will be at Hershey and will be judging, just not sure what assigned class. This is a general event, you will see car 1800 to 1983. I enjoy judging at the Camaro Nationals and AACA Hershey, they are both great events. I will be there Fri & Sat, give me a call on my cell 631-514-9765, I would be happy to look your car over.
