Original #s matching SS muncie 3 speed
« on: July 21, 2008, 05:18:45 PM »
Hi, I am interested in a 69 SS with a muncie 3 speed on the floor. Supposedly it's a #s matching SS. This just sounds funny to me. Why a 3 speed? How rare is this? Do you think it will distract from the SS image and not make the car as desirable as a 4 speed? He is asking 37k and rates it an 8 out of 10. The rarity intrigues me but not if it's a minus. Please give me some input and opinions. Thanks, 69 Houdini

That was the standard transmission on the L48 SS. Rare perhaps, desirable ...that a stretch.

3 speed would not be a plus IMO. Edsels are rare, but I still don't want one.

SS350 right?

Quite a few 69 SS350's had 3 speed HD manuals. It was part of the SS package. Cost $200 more for a 4 speed.

does it have the original 3 sp Hurst shifter with the round chrome stick?

I have seen a bunch of these over the years at swap meets and ebay so there must have been a good number of them sold

Actually, that's a Firebird part. The Camaro 3 speeds were Muncie shifters.

Did they have  "Muncie" stamped on the 3 speed shifter for the 3 sp Muncie trans?

I had a 3 sp shifter with Muncie stamped chrome stick but most 3 sp shifters I see
did not have the Muncie stamped stick

I have seen the shifters but not with the car attached

Yes. The stick is flat with muncie stamped on it.

My muncie 3 speed (behind a L48) works great. Real pleasure to drive. Dont want to beat on it too much though, parts are hard to come by.  I think they came standard behind 396 as well.

4 speed would be a little "cooler" though.
