how fast were they??

my camaro is an 11.5:1 L72 427, M21, 4.10 gears, L88 cam, 2.25/1.88 valves.  car pulls super hard to 7000, but i have never taken down the track. back in the day just how fast in the 1/4 were these cars? can it break into the 11s on drag radials and traction bars?? its a tribute balwin/motion clone.  done my homework on those cars, just need to get the boss to understand the mistress and the need to finish the restoration!  new here, but a true camaro-muscle car lover. 3-69 camaros in the family and a 70 396 fourspeed Chevelle for the boy...........

Hmmm.  Interesting question.  I don't think you'll be quite that quick based on what you're saying.  Here's an article from Super Chevy that has a 427 Camaro in it:

I can only remember reading in more than one place that the Baldwin-Motion Performance Phase III Camaros with one of their Baldwin-Motion drivers were guaranteed to run sub 12's at at least 120 mph.  I don't know if this was with slicks, open headers, etc.  Rumor has it that Baldwin-Motion never had to refund any purchaser their money.

Open headers are huge, and he's down near sea level, that makes a big difference.  It might do it.

My buddy had a 68 Motion 427 in high school (72-73). On weekends, we'd drive the car 40 miles to Numedia Dragway with a toolbox in the trunk. Once there we would rip the exhaust system off. That was our race prep. The car ran consistent low 11's.  Hooker headers, Lakewood bars, 4.10 rear with G-60 street tires , and an M-22. I know he changed out the carb for a larger Holley but I can't remember what it was.  We spent the better part of two years running the living p--- out of that car.
In the summer of 1974, I can remember standing in the parking lot of his dad's hardware store on the day he sold the car. The two of us were laughing as we watched  it being towed away on a trailer. He sold it for $1850. We thought we really put a screwing to that guy because we kept the Cragar S/S's and the Holley. Wonder who's laughing now?

The Motion cars were BAAADDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!   The Phase III Camaros were brutal, and were very capable of 11s with slicks and open headers even back then. The fastest pure stock '69 Yenko left today can run very low 12s on street tires! The guys at Motion were in essence, renegades, and they would put virtually anything on the car you wanted. They played hard and fast with EPA regulations and turned out some real killers before they got shut down. LT-1 Vegas--LS-6 454 Camaros--it was unreal. I have an old Hot Rod magazine with an ad in which Motion advertised an LT-1 Vega with a Muncie for around $4000. If you had a '69 Camaro and wanted a 427 with a tunnel-ram, they'd do it. I remember reading that Don Yenko was almost scared to do a 427 Nova because it was so powerful, but the Motion/Baldwin guys pushed the envelope to the limit. In my opinion, they don't get enough credit or magazine space compared to the Yenkos. They were the original bad boys because they bent so many rules and told the EPA to buzz off. I guess it's politically incorrect today to give them credence in magazines. I say ^5 to Joel Rosen and that bunch who spit in the government's eye and created some of the baddest, fastest Camaros ever sold before gasoline went to hell.

It all depends on your setup\tuning and the ability to hook the car. If all of these are right it will go into the 11's. If you want to make sure the car hooks try a set of Cal-Tracs (Name of the Co.)Most of your Super-Stockers use them and they make a car hook GREAT. Be careful and dont tear that 4speed out.

I asked Joel Rosen "Mr Motion" about the ads that guaranteed the Motion Performance Phase III Camaros would run 11.5 ET.
 Joel said the MP Camaro drag car was runing 10.5 ET and was the same set up as the Phase III street car.
 He did not feel his guarantee would be a problem since he had a full one second cushion.

Joel also said that no one ever challenged the 11.5 ET guarantee.

It may take some dialing in the carb (acc pump, PV's, jets, etc), timing, and experimentation but take into consideration that Jerry McNeish's Old Reliable has been through a NHRA tear down. It's stock and runs 10's. So I am sure you could get 427 into the 11's.
