kick panel cables
« on: April 22, 2008, 10:31:55 AM »
The cables for the astro ventilation (upper vents) in my 69 Z has broken plastic on the outside of the cable. Plastic is all there just split clean. Cable is fine just the hard plastic has dry rotted I guess. I was considering trying to fix the cables. Any ideas on how to glue or adher the hard plastic together so when you push the knob in on the kick panel the cable will push through the plastic.

I've encountered this problem often. I've tried glue and melting the plastic back together both didn't work. The best fix I've had so far is to slip heat shrink tubing over the entire length of the plastic tubing. Applying heat to the heat shrink tubing tightens it up and keeps all of the pieces together. Actually I've applied two layers of the heat shrink and it holds fine. Be sure to size the heat shrink tubing correctly so it grips tightly. Good luck!

I shrink wrapped the cables and they work perfect. Great trick.

I also used heat shrink for the first time 7 years ago. Great minds think alike.
