I'm taking a vote on which insturment cluster to go with.
« on: March 24, 2008, 10:41:19 PM »
Okay, I am building an awesome pro-tour 69 Camaro and I am completely up in the air about what I shoud go with for my guages.  One day I think I have made up my mind and the next day I change it.  So, I am looking to you guys in the Camaro world and find out what you guys think look the coolest. (Also because my wife is sick of me asking her over and over).  My Camaro is hi-tech and definitely screams pro-tour.  The interior changes include a set of black leather seats from a 2000 Camaro and the console and steering column are from a 2000 Camaro as well.  The wiper controls are on the turn signal.  Also, I have a roof console from a 2003 Cevy Astro van.

I have narrowed it down to these two choices.

Covan dash in brushed silver with auto meter Ultra-Lite II (Silver face/orange needle).  I love the cool race car look of the gauges and the sweep of a bright orange needle or Dakota Digital with bright blue numbers.

The car is very high tech in all aspects.  Gauges with needles seem kinda of old fashioned, but if you look around today, even though we have the technology, even new cars still have the "needle" gauges.  I remember older cars, such as late 80's/early 90's Thunderbirds as well as certain third gen Firebirds using digital numbers, but somehow this never seemed to catch on and they went back to traditional gauges.  So, what do you guys think?  Tried and true Autometers with the covan dash or the higher-tech off the beaten path of digital numbers.  One thing I like about the Dakota setup is that I can get 0-60mph times and quarter mile times with the computer that comes with it...all without going to the track.

Thanks for the input...the end vote will determine my decision.

Steve

Personally I've been leaning to the covans with a twist. Speedo left and a quad on the right with a pontiac style hood tach. Leaves 4 additional holes for more instruments. I also prefer needles.

In the fall of 1989 I purchased a 1990 Beretta and paid $300 extra for a digital dash. Besides the numbers for the speed and tack it also had digital barcodes for everything including temperature, oil pressure and battery.  I owned that car for 15 years and 358,000 km before I sent it to the scrap yard. I really loved that digital dash. My wife’s 2001 Grand Prix has regular analogue gauges and a head up display (HUD) with digital information reflected off the windshield. I love driving that car. Have you looked into HUD displays? They can give you the best of both. It is a very personal decision but I prefer a digital dash.
