It doesn't look like there is a whole lot of room to slide the bolt out of the leaf spring shackel. Has anyone had problems getting that out ?

You are correct, but it is commonly done. You need to raise the vehicle to let the axle hang to get the most room. Support the car at frame rails next to the front spring bracket.

So no gas tank removal or anything like that right? I have dismantled junk cars in the past with no regard for beating up something to get them out, It's just been too many years to remember the details

The top shackle bolt(and bottom bolt too) should come out towards the Outside(Quater Panel) not the gas tank,There is enough room to get it out with no problems. Good Luck
