Trying to verify 1968 SS L78 stripe delete
« on: January 04, 2008, 12:43:50 AM »

Need help please. I purchased an original 68 SS L78 car this past
spring. The car spent its entire life in its hometown of Cumberland Md.
It was sold from Mc Intyre Chevrolet in Cumberland. The car was re-painted
with lacquer ( UU LeMans blue) about six years ago. I asked the owner
why there was no SS stripe on the car. He says the car never had the stripe.
Could this be correct? I have the original window sticker options are :

  5717AK  Blue Vinyl Trim
  5900UU  LeMans Blue
  5M21BA  4-Spd CL Ratio Trans
  5L78AC  SS Equip 375HP V8
  5G80WA Positrac Axle 410R
  5F41JA   Spec-Pur Suspension
  5U63AB  AM Radio
  5J50CA   Power Brakes

Is there way to determine stripe delete? Was there such a thing as stripe delete?

Don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure you could have ordered a car without the stripes.  I know you could have ordered them a different color (black vs. white) than what GM usually put on the car with a particular color.  It was just coded as special paint.  As far as how to prove it you would most likely need the build sheet.  Wait for others to give a definitive answer though!!!

Tom

Paint code is UU  Lemans Blue--Jerrys book says either white or black
stripe could be ordered w/this color. The gentleman I purchased the
car from has known the original owner for years.
I had the opportunity to speak with both these guys. Both men insist the
car never had the stripe.

 Thanks

Stripe delete cars were "specail paint" the paint code for a stripe delete car should be - - or z z
http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#ExteriorColors:S:SpecialPaint

Lemans Blue would have a white stripe: http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#ExteriorColors:T:ExteriorPaints

Doug asked me to post a shot of his trim tag. Is it possible that the dealer removed the stripe before it was delivered to the original owner ?
Would it just "buff off " ?

A stripe delete would appear on the window sticker as special paint. It had stripes when it left the plant.

I'm not sure--he lives 2 1/2 hours away and I met him unexpectedly
at a pig roast this past Sept. He showed up in a wild bigblock pro-street
69 Camaro. The guy I had bought the car from saw him arrive and said
" theres Mike-- hes the guy we bought the car from 15 yrs ago". We talked for
several minutes --Mike said the only change to the car was 4:56 rear end gears to
replace the orginal 4:10's. Its a blast to drive but I can't really go anywhere.
Bought new gears this past fall at Carlisle-- will install them soon.
