AXEL #'S
« on: August 06, 2007, 12:14:45 AM »
I just pulled the rear end out of my 69 SS for overhaul.  I have the axel code but not sure of several letters. ???..C & E.  Here is how it appears on the axel.

C BR 1017G1        I'd appreciate the input.  Thanks

CBR is either a 3.07 Posi from a very late 1969 Camaro, or a 3.07 Posi from a very early 1970 Nova.

This one was assembled on October 17th at the Detroit Gear and Axle plant, 1st shift.

What's the date on your Trim Tag?

Joe,

Check out THIS ARTICLE regarding the Trim Tag for the date. You should see a number then a letter. In your case, you should see something like 10A, 10B, etc... The 150116 you posted is probably the Body Number.

The "E" stands for Eaton Posi, one of the manufacturers of the posi carrier Chevrolet used.

I got the cover off and counted the teeth on the gears looks like it was changed from a 3:07 to a 3:50 ratio. I have 42 teeth on the ring and 12 on the pinion.  I divided and came up with a 3:50 ratio.  Did I do it right?

The tooth count for both the ring gear and pinion gear is stamped on the O.D. of the ring gear on GM gears, along with the date they were made.
