Tic-Toc Tach redline question
« on: May 23, 2007, 07:14:55 PM »
Does anyone know what engines the differnet redlines on the tach were for?For example I think the 6,000 redline was for either the 302 sb and the 396/375hp(solid lifter cars). But what I cant figure out is the 5,000 and the 5,500 redline. What engines were they used for?My car has the 5,500 and it is a 68 RS/SS 396 car but I'm not sure which one.I think it's the 350hp one. ???  :-\

My '68 Z/28 (MO code - 302cid/290hp) has a 6000 rpm redline tic-toc-tach in it.  I looked at a '68 Rally-Sport (ME code - 327cid/210hp) survivor car back in February and it had a 5000 rpm redline tic-toc-tach in it.

Take a look in the table (under optional tachometer) here:
http://www.camaros.org/diffs68.shtml

You can also tell which hp engine you have by the engine codes listed in the same table.

Hey thanks to everyone who replied to my question.Going by the chart from the link left by Lakeholme,it looks like my car is the 350hp because of the m21 in it.
The car was bought in 1973 by my brother.Whoever owned it had decided to take out the 396 and repalce it with a 327 from a 65 Corvette. The M21 and the 12 bolt were left in the car.My guess was being 1973  that maybe the gas shortage then was what was this persons reason for doing this swap.I dont know I was only 4 yrs old .He also removed the bumble bee stripe and made it all black with wire hubcaps and spinners on them that said SS.Those puppies are long gone.My brother had Crager SS with N50's.That's how I remember it.
