Trans tunnel cutting at factory

John Hinckleys Assembly Process CRG Report didn't really address how the 4 speed shifter hole was installed on first gen camaros. Does anyone know what GM's practice was for cutting the shifter hole? Was it stamped, sawed, or burned with a torch?

The 67s, and I think the 68 s also, had a clean hole, while the 69s were torch cut.

Don't know about 67 or 68 but 69 were definately torched in a semi oval

We've been here before. PLEASE put me down for stamped out. I've NEVER seen a floor/stick shift with a torched hole. I think Kurt or someone saved a picture I sent a couple of years ago of a '69 shifter hole. I've still got the dimentions written down somewere.

I have three 69s that appear to be torched. And have seen other 69 bodys that appear that way.

The 69 three speed holes may have been stamped, but all four speeds were torched. They were still torching the four speed holes up to at least 1981 in the Camaros. If you have a stamped hole in yous it is most likely more of a square shape and a three speed hole. So I beg to differ as I have taken apart factory original Camaros with the torched holes. Don't really matter what anyone says, seeing is believing

Would any members here have pictiral references for the 69 torched vs. cut shifter holes?  I for one would like to see how similar
they are from car to car.  Did the factory use a template for the torching operation?  Anyone know?

My 69 3-speed has a nice "stamped" clean cut rectangle hole with radiused corners. It uses a small bellows boot with a rectangle retainer surrounding a flat-stick muncie shifter.

Yes Three speed is atamped 4 speed is torched, Except for a lot of Z/28s You see on Ebay

I'm not that well versed on 3/4 speed holes.Why would the holes be different and how do 67/68 autos on the floor with linkage figure into this? I put a 4spd in place of the 3spd in my 67 and it fit,it did have a aftermarket shifter though.

I have a 69 convertible with a 4-speed and it has a torched hole. I am in the process of replacing the floors but I kept this section for refrence. I will most likely use my plumbing torch and a dull axe to duplicate the hole.

I have a 68 3-spd car that had the column shifter converted to a floor shifter. The location seems odd to me...closer to my right leg than I would expect. Are the 3-spd tunnel holes in the same location as the 4-spd holes?
