1969 Camaro Rally Wheel restoration
« on: July 06, 2023, 12:03:49 AM »
Any suggestions with removing black spray paint from original rally wheels. Used 3000 psi pressure power washer that removed some of the
black spray paint. 1/2 of the black paint still there. Original Argent silver baked finish still on rally wheels and in good condition. Last resort is
to spray paint on Argent silver. Thanks for any suggestions.

Xylene, Paint thinner, brake clean, or paint remover.

I would suggest a spot test using a cotton swap applicator and a little "DOT-3" brake fluid, it just might cut the black paint and not bite into the factory silver, start with just a small test spot.

That will most likely depend on length of exposure and applied effort. If your looking to preserve the original finish that has been painted over, that may not be possible due to the new paint creeping into the nooks and crannies of the wheel. When chemicals get into those areas it may remove more finish than desired.

Easy Off oven cleaner works great for taking off rattle can top coats and leaving original GM paint on. Pic is after removing 2 heavy coats of rattle can.

Why not just remove the tire and sand blast it.  That'll get it done.

Sandblast will remove the original finish being primer and Argent silver. Author ask how to remove black spray paint recoat and keep the original GM finish.

Thank you for the tip. Haven't tried the Dot 3 brake fluid. Will let you know when I do.
