Correct factory shifter ball for X66
« on: January 01, 2023, 03:10:38 PM »
Does anyone know what the correct shifter ball is for a 1969 X66 L78? I currently (which may be correct) have the chrome, non marked ball and wanted to be OEM correct..

Console cars used a chrome ball without legend. Cars without console used a black plastic knob with the legend.....Joe

Interesting. I should have added that its a M22 4 speed.  So I would use 3955763 for lower and 3955762 for upper? The AIM book was showing 3920217 and 3920218 for the ball halves... confused.

Part numbers in the assm manual may or may not be the actual part number. The picture I posted is a car that has 12k original miles & is a non console car, just like yours....Joe

Here's a listing of a reproduction. I know nothing of the quality. The car would've required a legend of the shift patern when sold new....Joe

?

Your shifter is not OEM. That's an aftermarket Hurst, as sold in speed shops back in the day.

Which means you may not be able to use the original ball if it's a different thread. The original 1969 Camaro 4 speed Hurst shifter used a 3/8"-16 thread and some of the aftermarket Hurst shifters used a 5/16"-18 thread. You'll need to check yours before you plunk down your money.

So the OEM shifter would be Hurst round bar type, not Hurts flat like mine?
