1967 AIR pump numbers decode?

Hi,

I sent an email to Kurt Sonen on 11/25 with photos but thought I'd ask here on the forum too.

So my AIR pump was on my 67 when I purchased the car in 1985 and has been working fine all these years until the main bearing finally quit a few weeks ago. I was about to send it out to Bill Hodel of Massillon, Ohio for a rebuild when I looked at the numbers and wondered if it is the correct pump? I'll include info and ask if you can help. Thanks!

Car is 67 convertible 11B LOS with 327/210 and powerglide. Engine pad stamp is VII23MF and the car was sold new in late November 1966 at De Long Chevrolet of San Rafael, CA.

My AIR pump numbers are as follows:

1. The front casting behind the 4 bolt pulley is 5696122
2. The stamp on the tab on top of the pump is 21791U (this is what has me most concerned)
3. The rear part of the pump where the hoses connect and is painted black has a casting of 5696132.

I'm rusty on sending photos but maybe Kurt could send the photos from my email to him of Friday 11/25 ?

The pump is dated 217th day of (I assume) 1969.  The "usage code" per the above link, should be A or C, not U.

Looking at the 1967 AIM under UPC K19 Sheet A5, the correct pump would be 5696104 for a 327 2-barrel.  However, I'm not sure if that is also the number you'd see cast on the main body, or a part number for a full pump assembly.  But since the AIM shows the plug and muffler as separate items, I tend to think the body casting should match the AIM part number listed.  I have a few pumps and will check tonight to see if the casting # is the same as the part # in the AIM. I looked at the GM Parts wiki and didn't get any results at all for your 5696122.

There's a chance that back in the day the original pump locked up and someone went to a salvage yard and pulled your current pump off a 1968 or 1969 GM car.  These Saginaw pumps may have also been used on other makes.

Could had been a warranty pump. Is not 68-69 pump because the back housing would be 7801149.

So I checked the four I have and all have that raised 5896122 on the front casing.  That is the number for the aluminum body, not the compete pump.  Those with usage code A have all three hose connections coming straight out the back, while the C code have the larger tube angled off to the side.  All have 5896132 on the rear cast iron section.  I'm thinking they had an ink stamp or decal to differentiate the different pumps at the assembly plant.  Since yours has a 4-bolt pulley and a 1969 date stamp, it must be an "up through 67" service replacement.  Unless you have a show car I'd just get yours rebuilt. They do show up on eBay, if you really need a more correct date.

Last thing, FWIW - looking at a 1966 P&A on the GM Parts Wiki, it appears a numbers correct pump for your application would have a 5697748 raised part number on the front casing

I'll guess it's a service part - the 69 pump is a different design, nothing interchanges.

Hi all,
Wow. Gotta give thanks to Kurt for posting my photos. Also big kudos to PetesL48 for all of his research.
However, I think I'm left with more questions than answers because it looks like my pump is a 1969 replacement. Funny how it fits so well and has the 4 bolt pulley as well.
I did use the email link to contact PetesL48 directly as now I have plenty of questions on what the correct pump numbers would be and the date code range for stamps as well.
His research does begin to lead me in the correct direction and I hope it can be clarified and added to the CRG smog pump report as I think far more detail is needed there. In fact, after reading it I was concerned my pump could be a replacement but I was really not clear what the correct pump numbers should be and really still don't.
Thanks to all and I hope my questions lead to more clarifications on smog pumps.
