1969 tail light bulbs
« on: July 18, 2022, 11:56:47 PM »
I have a 1969 Z28 (non-RS) and have a question on the correct tail light bulbs.  When my parking lights are on, the inboard parking light is much brighter than the outboard.  Current outboard parking/turn signal/brake light bulb is 1157, reverse light bulb is 1156 and inboard parking light bulb is 1156.  Is that correct?

The simple and easiest process is to inspect the bulbs. The 1156 is a single bottom post with the tabs even on both sides. 1157 has 2 posts on the bottom and the tabs are offset. I would remove the bulbs and see what the socket base is. Upload pictures.

Original 1156 used to match the parking light intensity, New ones match the brake light.  So use 1155 for inboard light, 1156 for reverse and 1157 for the outside park/brake.

The 1157 has 4cp on low & 32cp when the brakes are on. The 1156 is also 32cp so it looks like the brakes are on all the time. Not very safe. The 67 lamp is 4cp which is perfect for the inboard light on a non RS car....Joe

Thanks for all the detailed feedback.  I will use 67s or 1155s.

I just heard of this Camaro group for the first time and the info here is really helpful.

I believe the #67 is not the correct bulb.

I would love to know the correct number. I never could find it during the search for my own car. I checked the owner's manual & the parts catalog dated 1972. I knew the globe size & base were the correct size. My friend with the 12k miles car couldn't remove one for his car. Concerned about breaking it so I went to the GE parts spec book. 67s were everywhere. They fit clip light on most comm vehicles.....Joe

The AIM (UPC12 - D4) details the wiring diagram for the rear (standard non-RS) tail lights. The AIM also indicates that this rear harness was installed by Fisher Body. Page 16-43 of the Fisher Body manual provides a tail bulb usage chart, and indicates a #67 for the inboard tail lamp, #1156 for the backup, and #1157 for the outer tail lamp. I tried to attach copies of the manuals , but they're too large a file. Hope this info helps.

I installed #67s in my rear inboard tail lights and they worked great.  Inboard and outboard are now the same brightness.

Good info for non RS cars. RS took 2 #1157's per side (one inner and one outer) #1156 backup down below bumper.
