68 RS Hideaway Help

Hi All.
I just purchased an unmolested 68 RS/SS. The hideaways are not working and I am looking for some direction of where to start and what the most common issues to look into first. I would prefer to get them working rather than update to electric in order to maintain originality. Any help would be appreciated.

Check your hoses first, underhood and under the dash at the headlight switch. If the hoses are old, look for splits at the fittings and the filters - vacuum leaks are no bueno to maintaining the system functionality. I assume you've tried the valve on the reservoir for manual operation. Reproduction hoses are no real blessing, either - not usually as durable a compound as the originals, they'll dry out fairly quickly. Failing in finding vacuum leaks, look to the actuators for integrity - originals are getting long in the tooth, might need replacing. hopefully you'll spot the problem (my last malfuction was a split hose at the inline filter near the firewall, underneath the fitting where you couldn't see it).

These things are notorious for not operating correctly when you need them - always a challenge. Good luck and let us know how you make out -

To avoid chasing your tail, do these in order.

#1. Verify the vacuum switch on the headlamp switch is working. If the tab on the metal slider has broken off, the system won't work.

#2. Verify the valve on the reserve tank is working. There is an internal rubber piston that crumbles with age. If the valve looks original, just replace it with the OER repro.

#3. Verify the actuators are still functional. They can rust and leak.

If it still doesn't function, do an analysis of the system. Look for cracked hoses, broken connectors, vacuum leaks. It is not a complicated system. A simple methodical analysis will uncover the problem.

I've attached a drawing of the vacuum system on the 68 and 69 Camaro to guide you through the snake pit. Note that the colors referenced in the drawing indicate the stripe colors of the hoses so unless you still have all your original hoses, you'll have to trace them manually.

It also helps if you purchase a vacuum pump. It makes it much easier to troubleshoot the various components.

I think I will end up replacing all hoses.
I see many different aftermarket choices out there. Which ones are worth having?

 Have heard some bad reports on repro vacuum hoses. Mainly, the lack of longevity (cracking). I shouldn't say anything as I've had mine for 10yrs+ without any trouble. 🤞 Got them on ebay of all places.

The weakest links in the system are the relay valve on top of the vac. tank and the actuators. I recommend shooting some silicone spray in the ports to help revive the internal rubber seals. Again, has worked well for me. 🤞

Actually, 10 years is pretty good! A friend of mine bought a very nice 68 RS in 1975 and even then his hoses were staring to have issues. Mostly splitting at the ends where they attach to the tank, actuators, switch, etc... so cutting off the split ends fixed his problems, but that's only 7 years for the factory hoses!

Do you remember the ebay seller? I'm fairly certain all the hose kits come from the same country so it's just a matter of price and distance, but you never know.
