1969 396 (402)
« on: June 16, 2021, 01:51:37 AM »
I read several articles about the 402 here but I couldn't pin point when Chevrolet started using the new 402 in the 1969 Camaros. Anybody know?
Thank you, Joe

Is it a FACT that Chevy installed the 402 in '69 Camaros?

I recall only that the 1970 model year was the first use of the 402 in place of the '396' engines in SS396 Chevelles??

Yes; a few 'C' prefix 396/402 engines were used in production starting late August '69.

Thanks William, as I didn't know that.   From that information, it seems GM began substituting 402's for 396's at the 'normal' time for initiating new production (of 1970 models), it was just that Camaros extended their '69 production for a few months!

Both 396 and 402 L34 & L35 engines were used until the end of production.

Have no 'C' prefix L78s, may have been some. Data indicates they banked July L78 engine production.

Thank you William...
I was wondering why I hadn't seen a L78 later than I believe July 25th - even on some Sept and oct cars.
