Just bought a 69 RS
« on: April 06, 2007, 07:37:18 PM »
Hello!  Newbie to the website, but longtime Camaro lover!  Finally bought what I have been looking for...a 1969 Camaro RS.  I am pretty stoked right now and am trying to find out everything I can.  The car hasn't been driven to 20 years, but is in great shape.  I am trying to find all of the numbers and decode everything I can.  Here is what I have found so far:

ST6912437NOR247261
TR 718  69 69 PNT
02A  X11

VIN: 12437########

10 Bolt Rear #A249

So I decoded the Cowl tag, VIN, and 10 Bolt easily enough.  I am having trouble with the engine, though.  I don't think the engine is original.  From the only code I have found, it seems to be a truck engine.  Here is the only number I have found so far (just forward of the passenger side valve cover)  V0823TDR.

Can anyone help decode this?  Thanks for your help!

David

David,

Congratulations on your '69 RS.  Tell us a little more about your ride.  I also have a '69 RS and would be glad to compare notes some time.  I believe the A249 number that you found on the carrier is the casting date, i.e. Jan 24, 1969.  Your cowl tag indicates that the body began to be assembled during the first week of Feb 69.  That agrees well. The axle code is on the front side of the tube on the passenger side.  See the following CRG link, http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#AxleCodes for more information.

I believe your block came from a 1972 truck application:

V= Flint Engine Plant
0823 = August 23

According to the following link:  http://www.nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-codes/chevy-engine-codes-suffix-7.php

TDR = 1972 350  175 HP, 4Bbl (K-10 & 20  truck application)  Note:  This code was used again in 1980 C-10 and C-15 truck use

Thanks Richard, I appreciate the help with the code.

Well, I bought the car from a someone that found it outside a barn.  Hasn't been driven in 20 years, but the car is in amazingly good shape for being outside all these years.  A few small rust spots here and there, but overall body is in good shape.  It was repainted blue with white stripes some time ago, and a white vinyl top was added.  Interior is also not bad, but needs a new padded dash!

All of the RS trim is there, along with both headlight doors.  Someone put an SS badge on the rear of the car, but I am pretty sure it is not an SS.  (No 12 bolt rear, and no other SS badges anywhere, including the steering wheel (RS).)  If I am wrong on this, someone let me know!

The trunk is not stellar, surprise surprise, but I have seen worse!  All of the rallye wheels are there and am just missing the center hub for one wheel.

The car is a great base to work with and restore, and I am very excited about having the car and working on it!
