Hurst Linkage Hits Trans Tunnel
« on: December 03, 2020, 07:29:37 PM »
The third fourth shift rod on my Hurst linkage (M-20) is rubbing against the transmission tunnel.  My car is an original four speed car with a console.   The installation instructions say "transmission rods supplied with this kit may require slight bending to clear obstructions".  Has anyone else had this issue?

Is the trans crossmember installed the right way? It is supposed to be oriented with the 3/8” factory shifter bracket mounting holes on the drivers side, lots of cars have them in backwards. It makes a difference.
Post a picture if you can.

The answer to your question is in your posting.

"transmission rods supplied with this kit may require slight bending to clear obstructions"

Many aftermarket shifters either the rods or the shifter handle rub or bang onto the tunnel or shifter hole. That is why you see so many hammered tunnels or cutouts around the shifter hole for clearance.

Hurst Competition Plus linkage kits will fit unaltered tunnels (I installed one in place of my Muncie shifter in my '68 Z) provided you use the right mounting plate.

At least mine did - no sheet metal inteference, or hole enlarging. The only mod I made was to alter an original Muncie handle to bolt in place of the console Hurst shifter (handle).

Something is wrong.  The Hurst fits if all the parts are right.  They are not all universal fit.
