Z/28s and vinyl roof option
« on: October 09, 2020, 04:31:46 PM »
I miss this group, the amount of misinformation spread in the camaro forums on facebook drives me nuts. I just saw a poster state that he knew a Z/28 was not real because the car for sale had a vinyl top, and most Z/28s did not have vinyl. Is there any evidence to support this? Other than a weight conscious buyer that wants to spare those few lbs on the roof for performance?

I'll be visiting more often, for my sanity. Picture, finished project, unrelated to this post.

His statement that most Z-28s did not come with a vinyl top is probably correct. But plenty of them did.

44.6% of 1969 Camaro coupes were ordered with a vinyl roof. 25.9% of Z/28s in our db with a known trim code had vinyl tops.

Most coupes [55.4%] did not have a vinyl roof; the install rate on Z/28s appears much lower than average. But, hardly rare.

Is this anecdotal, or is there any evidence of options paired with Z28? I know it was a popular appearance option in the late 60s.

Chevrolet did not track combinations of options. We have a rough estimate of Z/28s ordered with vinyl roofs from our database.

Later in the model year at Norwood, both Z/28 and vinyl roof options were coded on the body tag.

Thank you William for the excellent information. The sharing of knowledge in this forum is how I learned everything factual about first gens, far better than the half dozen camaro books in my house. Facebook has become such a crazy pool of misinformation, I wish folks would do their research here.

You're welcome!

Sooner or later you will hear the same misinformation about power steering on Z/28s. While fairly rare in '67 & '68, it was available all three years. Penske even tried it on their '69 T/A race cars.

Fold down back seat is another. I rode in a '69 Z the day it was picked up from the dealer that had one.

Another one you will hear is that Z/28 could've been ordered with different engines or the 302 was a Ford engine.

I love the vinyl tops on 1969 Camaros. Only year like that..Joe

That’s why that Ford “Caution Fan” decal persists...as a Chevy deteriorates it turns into a Ford just prior to a scoop of rust😂
