Multi Leaf Spring Plates - 69 SS
« on: August 28, 2020, 12:03:37 AM »
Gotta stupid question.

Is there a difference between the right / left lower spring mount plates?

I see different part numbers for r/l units, but can't see the difference.....however, I noticed that the lower left shock mount on my car makes the shock mounting stud go in an angle that is not the same as the shock mount itself.  Just doesn't look right.  When its tight the stud is not in line with the rubber donut.  Looks crooked.

If there's a difference, do I have the plates reversed?

The only stupid question is the one that is never asked. There is a left & right. There is a notch for the bracket that supports the brake cable....Joe

Ahhhhhhhhh!!

Now I see!!!

Does the left Shock mount "tang" look different that the right?  Is it more of a 90 degree from the top mounting surface?  Doesn't look like it in your picture.

Mine is really at a different angle than the shock bottom mounting donut.  It deforms the rubber donut when everything is tightened.

Just doesn't look right.  Beginning to wonder if all left side plates are made this way from GM.

Thanks Joe!!

The tang looks to be the same on both sides. The shock mounting bolt only secures the shock in place. It would have no effect on the crush of the bushing...Joe

That looks better than what I have.....
I just ordered a new shock plate from HBC......USA made. Supposed to cure that problem.
We'll see....

Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm not sure if the plates I have are GM or not........I'm thinking not since I see the pic you provided.  My originals were really rusty / pitted, and I bought the "GM" set I have installed at Carlisle...I guess the seller bullcrapped me.....oh well...buyer beware I guess.  Typical Carlisle experience.

Thanks for all your help Joe.......I appreciate it!!
Mike

Sure. Glad to help. Originals are still out there. I've tried very hard not to buy repro stuff. Sometimes you have no choice...Joe

Welp, finally took off the plate and it was a GM unit for sure....

Twisted like a pretzel.  The middle of it is all caved in and the shock mount is moved upwards.
Never paid attention to it when I installed it 30 years ago....

I’ll post a picture of it soon.
