Muncie identification sticker ?
« on: April 12, 2020, 08:22:35 PM »
Since 68 and prior Muncie's don't have anything in the stamp to tell you what the internals are, and the metal p/n tag in those years does not have the 2-letter broadcast sheet code for the trans on it, I have always assumed there was either a tag, sticker or grease pencil marking of some sort showing the broadcast code.  But I have never found one with any evidence of any of those things.  There is usually a single-digit number brushed on in black paint where the shifter would mount on the tailhousing, but never a broadcast code.

Have any of you every found anything on a pre-69 Muncie with the broadcast code?

What prompted me to ask this is in the pic below.  This is the original M20 trans from a 67 Chevelle SS built at Fremont.  VIN is on the trans so it is original.  The car was wrecked in late 1969 or early 1970 and put in dry storage, and shows a little over 20K miles.  Obviously the engine leaked like a sieve from all the grease present.  But there is the clear outline of a sticker (or something like that) on the side cover.  If you account for the sticker going down into the indention for the corner side cover bolt, it is a perfect oval shape --  too perfect to be some random mark that happened by accident.  It is 1-7/8" long and 1-1/8" tall.  If it was a sticker it would have been raised up on the front edge where it went across the casting number, which would explain why some grease and dirt got behind the leading edge of it to make the dirty spot in the middle at the front.

Any ideas?  Could this be where there was a sticker with the XS broadcast ID code on it ??  Thanks!

Good point. I've definitely seen TH400's and Saginaws with the broadcast code on them. But I don't recall Muncies.
There had to be some ID on them to differentiate all the different part #'s.
No, never seen a sticker like that on one...

This is a P9H05B Muncie, sitting in a basement since 1972. Car had about 10k miles on it at the time. Looks like X X written on the case in ink and something else above it. Probably quickly faded or washed off.
Learning more and more about less and less...

That's neat.  Was XX a broadcast code in 69?

In 66-67 Chevelles I think XS was M20, and XT was M21, but not positive about that.  I know XS was definitely  M20 in 65, as it is on my unrestored Z16 broadcast sheet.

I've seen a lot of different W_ codes on some of the metal tags for later years.

All the ink stamps I have seen on '69 Muncie 4 speeds has been in yellow and on top of the main case.

I have a complete NOS M21 Dec. '68 build date with an XF code on it.

Also have an NOS M22 main case that was a complete trans at one time and was cannibalized by Grumpy Jenkins. The assembly stamp is 9B21C and it has an XH ink stamp on top of the case.

The broadcast code for a Muncie would have been on the chassis broadcast sheet, correct? And it would have been the same code regardless of make, plant, etc, correct? I know there is are almost no copies of Camaro broadcast sheets from Norwood, but what about LA? Isn't the broadcast copy on top of the gas tank the chassis broadcast sheet? Same for corvette tank sticker? And are there any existing chassis sheets from other lines, ie,  impala, nova, or chevelle?

That sounds similar to the other trans. The longevity probably depended on the differences in what ink/paint was used.
Can you post a picture?
Thanks!

Hi Guys.
FWIW. I have a P7C297 with (w/ 7L159206 stamped 3 x on top) and it has  very similar black  X on the tail shaft housing under where the shifter would mount.
           I do have pictures.

Can't remember what year this was from. I don't think there were any code stickers used, but I could be wrong. Not sure how far back ink stamps were used for identification.
