Maybe a L30/M20
« on: October 04, 2019, 06:36:08 AM »
Hello and greetings from Switzerland

My Name is Patrick iam 30 years old and i fall in love with the first gen camaros as a kid

Iam a big fan of the first Camaro gen. And have Start collect Parts for it now for 10 Years and also Restoring 2 at the Moment.
But now iam a little bit confused about the trimtag from the car after i have read the articel about the L30/M20.
Because i have made a barnfind 67 Camaro at a old ladys House.
I Have Bought it now and start next week to bring it in my Workshop.
First i was thinking it is a Orginal RS/SS Not More but then i found the Original TrimTag Plate and found the 4P Stamp and the infos about the L30/M20
But now i have the Problem that i dont have found a gearbox or a Engine. And the Car has Only a 10 Bolt rear Axle.

The Swiss Vehicle Papers say it has a 327 Engine with 220Hp (Dont musst be right because at the Import time to Switzerland, authorities had no infos about cars from the usa at the time of the import)

Hope you can help me a little bit to check if it is a original L30/M20 if it is i dont know what i should do with it. because i had the plan to start my first ls6 swap.

But a Origanl L30M20 would be to bad to make the LS6 Swap. What would you say? is a L30/M20 it worth to start the long time to search engine an the transmission?

Oh The Engine i have found there is the casting nummber 3970010

Trim Tag :
General Motors Corperation
018                         F392
67-12437                LOS-17217
760-Z                       N-2
W 2LGU 3

Best Regarts and Thank you

Patrick

I'm not up on '67 cowl tag codes, but there are others here who can tell you lots.

The engine is not correct for a '67 model, as the '010' engine was a last half of '69 casting.

Use the VIN number to determine approximate production date.  Once you know that, you can make a determination if the 10 bolt rear end is the original one.

Where does the speedometer cable go through the firewall? This car should have a 12 bolt and being a 4 speed, the location where the speedometer cable goes through the firewall will indicate whether it had a Saginaw transmission (L30/M20) or a Muncie transmission (SS). Is there a letter after the 3 on the cowl tag"

Welcome Patrick,
Just my personal thoughts, but even if it left the factory as an L30/M20, with the original drivetrain now missing, you can build it to suit your preferences. Trying to piece together period-correct drivetrain components, all dated in the right timeframe, can get very expensive - especially as you're outside the USA.
Anyway, whatever you decide, enjoy your Camaro and keep us updated on your progress!

Rather than "018", the upper left number on the tag is probably 01B - second scheduling week of January
