a/c fender baffles for 1968 coupe
« on: August 15, 2019, 09:55:28 PM »
I am looking for the fender baffles that came on some 1968 models with factory A/C. These are the parts that go between the radiator support and the inside of the fenders. I have pretty much completed the restoration of my 68 L34 coupe but a few of the original A/C parts are hard to find. I have not seen any correct for 1968 fender baffles on EBAY in the last few years. Does anybody know where I can get a pair ( or at least the DS)? I know my car came with these originally because the PS was still in place when I disassembled the car for restoration. Thanks for any help.

I assume '69's were different due to the fender shape (I've got two extra open headlight pairs for a '69, but my only car with factory air is the '69 Z11). RS and open headlight were different - i've never seen the '68 versions.

"RS and open headlight were different"        that's interesting, the metal part or just the rubber parts? Do you know of any comparison pics?  jess

The 69 fender baffles were different from the 68's. Apparently the baffles for 1968 were only used between April and July 1968 on A/C equipped cars.

Noticeably different. Open headlight cars are flat panels, RS have a "curve" or offset built into the sheet metal to clear the RS actuators/mechanisms. I've seen a few sets over the years, few and far between (open headlight panels are reproduced nowadays). Never seen the '68 versions - but I know of one '68 BB RS/SS nearby with factory air (convertible to boot) that might chime in about them. Late '68 car as well -

I believe the convert's used the curved panels. Good picture in 68 AIM C60 B3 and 69 AIM C60 B3.

69 AIM DOES have a good drawing that shows two distinctly different panels AND specifies C60 A/C or not, but makes no mention of a different one for ralley sport, or RS with A/C  ?????

Yea - the 68 AIM shows a good drawing of the baffle (thanks Big iron) and it shows the "fish bone" pattern on the 68's ( like the attached photo on my original post). 69's have an "x" like pattern stamped into the sheet metal and they are a different size and shape. I have called around and I look on EBAY pretty often - but I haven't found any yet. A/C parts for 1968 Camaro's seem to be rare and the unique parts for the 68 BB cars are even harder to find.

RS and open headlight were different

This has me wondering. I have searched the AIM and the only reference I have been able to find concerning this is on page 206 (?,page number appears hand written), it shows two different baffles (3955983-4 for coupe, (12337-437) and 3949867-8 for convertible (12367-467)) and from the pics it appears the curved baffles are to clear the convertible "cocktail shakers". I can't find any mention of RS and nonRS baffles. Is there another reference that I am missing? Does anyone have pics that show the differences? I intend to change my non RS ac car to RS and wonder if I need to be looking for different baffles?  TIA, jess t

Those baffles weren't used in 1967, and in 1968, those baffles were only used on coupes. P/N 3937129 (left) and 3937130 (right).

And it didn't matter about Rally Sports. They used the same baffles as standard cars.

Starting in 1969, Coupes used P/N 3955983 (left) and 3955984 (right) and convertibles used P/N 3949867 (left) and 3949868 (right). But again, Rally Sports used the same parts as standard cars.

They were used to increase air flow through the condenser and radiator for A/C by blocking airflow that sneaks past the rad support on the sides.  There was also a short lived ABS shield that blocked air flow under the radiator support for BBC cars.

IMO, a Vintage air unit would benefit from increased air flow through the condenser same as the factory units.
