1968 Camaro Cutaway Display Car
« on: May 08, 2019, 11:11:12 PM »
I was going to wait a while in order to spread posts out a bit, but here is the 68.

So far I have only the one pic.  And I did one "zoomed in".

Photo credit to GM. All of the photos I have posted in this thread and others with credit to GM are copyrighted photos, and they are subject to copyright laws.

That's the only shot I've seen too.
These cutaways were works of art - serious amounts of time to make it.

Do any of the cutaways still survive, apart from the known Australian 1969 version? Would love to see one close-up.

I have not been able to find any other pictures of the 1968 version of the Camaro Cutaway display either.

They did use this same promotional picture in newspapers when talking about an upcoming auto show or the Chevy Show traveling display.

For instance, underneath the picture of the 1968 version of the Cutaway Camaro, an article on page 99 of the January 21, 1968 edition of The Palm Beach Post from West Palm Beach, Florida states, “CAMARO 'HALF CAR' The ‘inside’ story of Chevrolet's exciting new Camaro is exhibited in the special ‘half car’ display unit pictured above.  The sporty Camaro is "cut in two" to reveal design highlights and the workings of inner mechanical components. The Camaro ‘half car’ is a centerpiece of Chevrolet's 1968 automobile road shows.” (https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/134774799/)

I guess it's Camaro Cutaway Day today.  First I read the article about the '69 in Hemmings Muscle Machines and second, Tony Habeeb posts this fantastic color shot of a 1968 Camaro Cutaway car on his 1968 Facebook site.  This image demonstrates that it was painted red with what looks to be a white vinyl top.  Cool!

I have also found these advertisements for the 1968 Chevy Show featuring "The Camaro cut in half!"  Notice the first one features a non Rally Sport Camaro with what looks to be wheel covers.  I have never seen a picture of this car before.  They might have just used the picture of the 1967 Camaro Cutaway Car and superimposed a standard 1968 grill and wheel covers on it.

One more...

Interesting to note that they reversed the picture in this ad.
