1968 Camaro Stock Wheels and Tires
« on: March 21, 2019, 04:05:11 AM »
Hello Camaro owners:

I'm entering my 1968 Camaro into judging competition. I need to have bias ply tires on the car for originality and would like to know if anyone can tell me what was the brand of tire put on the car from the factory (Firestone, Goodyear, other?), the size of the tire (775-14? or F78-14?), and finally what was the actual size of the pinstripe (3/8", 7/8" or 1"?), which was an option. For background, my car was manufactured in May 1968, standard 327 mt, base model (not a Z28, SS, or RS). I also have stock hubcaps to use with the car, but am wondering if the chrome finish Chevy Rally wheels with Chevrolet Derby cap would also meet the originality requirement for a 68 Camaro. Many thanks for all the help. Tommy 68

Read THIS regarding brands, but unless the original buyer (or dealer) ordered something optional, your car would have come with blackwall (no stripe) Uniroyal 7.35x14 tires on the stock 14x6 FC code wheels and BASE HUBCAPS (more info HERE and HERE).

There were a few options regarding wheels and wheel covers, including Full wheel covers (RPO P01), Simulate Wire wheel covers (RPO N95), Mag Style wheel covers (RPO N96), Mag Spoke wheel cover (RPO PA2) and Rally wheels (RPO ZJ7).

There were also several optional tires available including whitewall, white stripe, red stripe and raised letters.

Since there were so many options available, you'll have to decide what you want to put on the car.

More than half the 68 cars had P01 hubcaps and even more had P58 tires - Tires, 7.35-14-4 PR  two-ply whitewall.

That's great information.  I knew you guys would come through.  On the tires, what's the bias ply whitewall tire on the market today that comes closest to the Uniroyal bias ply tire used back in 1968.  Is it the Firestone 775-14 7/8" whitewall 7.75 (width) 7.65 (section width) or the BF Goodrich 775-14 1" whitewall 7.75 (width) 7.65 (section width)?  I've attached a photo of the wheel (with P01 cover) and tire combination I want to recreate for judging competitions.  Unfortunately, from the photo, I can't determine the size of the whitewall (7/8" or 1").  Much appreciate the help.  Tommy 68
