Z/28 Alternator Brace, the black one
« on: March 13, 2019, 02:08:16 AM »
Well, my aftermarket reproduction brace appears to be no where near accurate.  Not enough arch so it gets into the fan blades.  Who makes one that is correct?

Thanks,
Bill

Thanks for the response.  Have you used that exact one, or know a car that has it?

Bill, is the orange one original? Normally sold in pairs! Where did you purchase the black one? D&R, Heartbeat and others probably sell what is coming from a central supplier. The repro's stamped with GT as far as I know work fine.  https://www.ebay.com/itm/Camaro-67-68-Z28-Alternator-Brackets-2-pc-set-adjuster-brackets/371905775814?fits=Year%3A1968%7CSubmodel%3AZ28&hash=item56974fc8c6:g:CmUAAOSwc2FaSDkX

I bought the pair, stamped GT from T/A Performance in Ca last year.   I was trying to figure out if it’s maybe the geometry of The whole set up, including the lower mount, but I see that I have the very same headers and lower mount as you do, so the elevation of the alternator is probably ok.

I remember having that issue on my '68 Z that I had from '71 to'73.  I went with either a longer or a shorter v-belt to solve the problem.

They work a lot better if you mount the brackets behind the alternator mounting boss, as seen in this factory photo.

Jon is correct as the headers where the alternator brkt bolts up seems to change line up. I have our our blk/orange brackets bolted to rear of alternator and they line up straight where as from the front of alternator they look angled. But either front or rear mounted the two brackets line up. Looking at your pic something seems off but I’m not sure what.

Bill,
The problem appears to be the black bracket. It arches wrong and doesn't follow the contour and or bend of the orange bracket. At the very end of the both brackets to the right of the alt bolt the brackets should be uniform. Yours don't line up even.

Here is a picture of Chick's 68 Z28 as a reference. Maybe he can provide a better detailed picture.

Just an FYI also the alternator is incorrect and appears to be a later one with the finned or ribbed back, which has the built in regulator.

Thanks guys. John that is a great old photo.

I was able to trace the proper arch from enlarged photos of Chick’s car, Dave B’s blue one and some original bracket sets and use my press to re-arch mine. Fits a lot better now and clears the blades.   Alt is a mock up unit.

Thanks Dave, I was going to post two pictures to show similar but after I loaded on Flickr for some reason now I cannot open any picture to copy link to post, and now none of my folders come up. Pictures are there but can't do anything with them. Tells me "You seem to be using an unsupported browser." Geez! Thanks again!

My LH header has a 1" x 1" welded to the top of the header mounting flange. This is where you use the original alternator mounting bracket. In your original picture it looks like the alternator is too close to the valve cover. Does yours mount something like I'm describing?,,,Joe

It appears he has the reproduction Kustom Headers from what I can see and the same as what is on our 68Z and yes you bolt mtg bracket to the header. That was my reference that those headers do seem to move the alternator forward enough that mounting the black/orange brackets to the rear of the alternator as Jon showed lines up perfectly. But something was off much more it seems. But you bring up a point, Bill what mounting bracket did you bolt to the header?

Here is the lower mount I’m using.   Everything looks like it needs to move forward 1/4” to line up with the water pump and crank pulleys. There is enough meat in the bracket to slot the holes and make it up.

Problem posting my pics.  Here is a link anyway to the re-contoured black brace.
