Question about 67 Engine and no Partial VIN
« on: April 17, 2018, 07:09:21 PM »
I have a 67 RS and have a question about the 327 having no Partial VIN code on the pad.  It is stamped V0323ME with a casting date of C167 (or c187).  The car was built in the 4th week of March 1967.  I have found a few mentions of the lower HP 327's having no partial VIN but wanted to verify this is the case.  I am 99% sure this is the original engine and was told it is, but wanted to get some clarity about not having a partial VIN.  When I bought the car it did not come with the correct engine but with about a years work I tracked down one of the owners who still had the engine.  The original broach marks are still present.

This car is full of rare options with bucket seats with headrests, power windows, fold down rear seat, Air conditioning, front console with gauge package and factory tach. Rear speaker, deluxe shoulder harness seat belts, remote control mirror, and rear defogger.  It has power steering, and front manual disc brakes with the original 4 piston calipers.  Car needs a total restoration but is pretty complete.

Cowl Decode:
1 = Chevrolet
2 = Camaro
4 = 8-cylinder engine
37 = coupe body
7 = 1967 model year
N = Norwood, OH assembly plant
195938 = vehicle serial number sequence

Decode for body number: 092971

03D = Built the Fourth week of March.
67-12637 = Custom Interior Coupe.
NOR = Built in Norwood Ohio.
732 = Custom Bright Blue Bucket Seats.
Y = (AS2) Buckets and Head Rest.
E-E = Car Color is Deepwater Blue
R = Interior paint is Bright Blue
Options:
1X = (A31) Power Windows
1L = (A67) Fold-down rear seat
2E = (C60) Air Conditioner
2M = (M35) Powerglide Transmission
2G = (D55) Console front compartment
2R = (U80) Speaker rear
3B = (C50) Defogger rear window
3D = (U29) Courtesy Lamp
3L = (Z22) Rally Sport Package
4F = (D33) Mirror Remote Control
5B = (V32) Rear Large Bumper Guards
5Z = (A85) Shoulder harness - Deluxe
5Y = (A39) Belts All Deluxe

First of all, welcome to CRG. I believe you are correct on no partial vin. Sounds like a very well optioned car with good colors.

See this link.
http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#PartialVINs

On 1967 Camaros, generally only the Z28 and SS engines had the partial VIN's stamped.

Decent chance that is the original engine. Examples at that time typically had a bit larger gap between the engine assembly and the vehicle assembly.  BUT, there are some cases where the dates are very tight.

It would be hard for someone to say that it is NOT the original engine.

 The ME is a 1967 327 210 HP motor with powerglide trans. There would be no partial VIN for this application. Awesome sounding car though. the only difference between 210 HP and 275 + HP is a set of heads and a 4 barrel carb add a little cam. All easily found online in date correct stuff. Or just drive it the way it is.

Here is a pic of the cowl tag if that is the body numbers.  As far as I can tell it shows everything but the power steering and disc brakes.  But they are original 4 piston calipers.  And I have most of the options, including the seats with headrests and fold down rear seats.

Not many 67's out there with headrests or shoulder belts or power windows - this has all three!

Thanks everyone, I fell really good about the car.  I drove a plane jane 6 cyl 68 to High School and always wanted one with a RS with Deluxe interior and power windows.  I plan to start on it soon, collecting parts now.  Only thing is I wish it had black interior but for this car it is probably best to go back with the blue.

You should be happy with the end results if you follow the trim tag & follow what's known about 1967 Camaros. We're here to guide you as you need. It will be a very nice car & will stand out. The blue interior is a nice touch to this very interesting car....Joe

It came up on Craiglist out of the blue and I went with cash.  It did not have the original engine but I back tracked it two owners back and he still had it.  I paid a bit to get it but it makes the car worth way more in my opinion.  Everything else is original, powerglide, rear end, etc.  Even the disc brake calipers are the correct ones.  At some point someone wrecked the front and put a 68 fenders and standard grill.  No one I have ever talked to could tell me anything about the car, the guy I got it from was about to tub it and make a race car but felt like it was to special to do that.  I had no idea how rare some of the options were when I bought it, someone offered a crazy amount of money for the seats.  It needs a lot of metal repair (quarters floors, truck pan, etc) but is really not all that bad compared to some.  It has everything with it except the rear defroster which I purchased on ebay a few months ago and I am missing the deluxe shoulder belts.

It's your car but you might want to re-think adding more to it. What's on the trim tag is what Fisher body did different.
I optioned out a car years ago & now I'm undoing everything. Hope you don't like spoilers as they weren't available for 1967. Sorry...one of my peeves...Joe
