stamp and font good?
« on: March 31, 2018, 11:37:16 PM »
This block was in Dallas Texas, it is not the block from my "maybe Z".  it was listed in 68 orphans a while back and Kurt said its legit so i purchased the block to put in my car if and when i can prove its a Z28. i absolutely trust Kurt, however just recently a guy also with some stamp experience tells me he thinks its an obvious re-stamp because the  3 in the 403 has a rounded top and the 68 stamps had a 3 with flat tops ? and he notes the mis-aligned vin numbers towards the end.   just looking for honesty, if its fake its fake !
I have already had at reputable machine shop he check the deck height and told me this has never been decked and is still flat. so could you restamp a block without first decking it? would it not leave traces of old vin if you didnt?  thx

have a blessed Easter tomorrow!    HE is risen!!!!!

The pad is 'too clean' in the photograph, and I can't see broach marks in the photo.  Can you take a higher resolution photograph, then clip for JUST the pad (the full pad), and then use a good resizer to size the file to 200Kb (or just below)...  You should be able to see broach marks in the photo if it's done correctly...

Agreed. Need a better pic. If you are using an older digital camera, select the macro button. It is the button that looks like a flower.

Wipe it down with lacquer thinner too.

I wish I could take more pics. The machine shop ran a wire brush over the decks before they bored it. You can see some of the swirl marks in the pic. The block is oiled up in a thick plastic bag in my shop. Kurt may have the original posted pic or pics before I bought it. They might be better.   I'm specifically curious about the round vs flat 3 and the unaligned partial vin?   Can you have factory deck height if you deck the block? If that answer is no, then I see no way it could be a restamp? If yes then I understand the significance of the broach marks.
Thx for the replies!

That’s not typically stuff we discuss in an open forum.

Why would they run a wire brush over the decks? You told them the numbers were important, right?

I will X2 that statement. Might have been better Chris to send Kurt your info directly with what the other person told.

If you sent Kurt pics originally, then you should have those, right?

I am not saying one way or the other at this point.

Don’t fall into the trap of “this or that type of font was never used” if everything else looks right.  Every aspect and detail of a stamping needs to be looked at and evaluated.

No sir. The Dallas cl ad was in 68 orphans, as I live and hour from Dallas I opened the orphan page where a few comments had been made. I purchased the block after emailing Kurt as to the blocks authenticity and he stated it was good. So I went and bought it. I had no pics until after I purchased it.  I also had no reservation buying it back in 2014 based on kurts knowledge.

I sent cook my two pad pics that I snapped after I purchased the block. Maybe when he finds  all the Easter eggs today he can add better pics. Lol

So ???  The round top 3? Vs flat top 3 and the unaligned vin??  Can you explain or is that one of the non dicussed things on here for forgery issues? Thx for the added verification.
I don't want to sell this motor if I can eventually prove my cars a Z but if I prove its not I may want to sell it....Any real guess what it might be worth?

Not discussed here.

The stampings appear to be genuine.

For what it is worth, that depends on a lot of things.  You can try the TC site, they have a section on
"What's it worth?"

See this link. You will have to register for that forum.
