Anybody buy from LicensePlates.tv
« on: January 15, 2018, 09:42:48 PM »
Just curious; saw an ad for www.LicensePlates.tv
Apparently they make custom reproduction USA State License Plates.
Anyway, I'm wondering how good the quality is.

Also, It's strange that their Texas plates are the "euro" style?!?
My Camaro is a Texas car, but I wouldn't want that style plate on it.

Looks like TX has a state law against making TX plates - so they try to sell you something else.  Surprised most states allow it.

Texas DMV must approve and register YOM tags.  They do not accept repo tags. I figure you know that 69 Texas tags were black on white sets. Before you buy, check with DMV to make sure the tags are acceptable.

Here in NY old plates must be in good original condition and can't be restored even if using the correct paint type.
DMV doesn't look at the plates in person so some people do get them restored and have registered them successfully (providing the sequence number hasn't been reissued on a newer plate). DMV only requires a picture of the plate.

Here in NC on (antique 20 years or older) you can run any tag as long as you have the REAL one in the vehicle. Most guys keep them under the seat. You also get a property tax break if registered as antique.

My father bought some a few years back.  He bought custom 69 plates to say what he wanted.  They showed up and looked identical to his Ohio plates.   Not knowing if Ohio would register reproduction plates or not, he took them up to the DMV in Columbus.  They took one look at them and registered the car with them, no questions asked.  He ran them for years.

I'm sure states vary.  I was thinking of doing some Arizona plates, but not to register the car, just to run them on the front of the car, because Arizona doesn't require a front plate here, so I can run what I want up front.

Somebody welded up some custom plates. The DMV accepted one. Later submitted another and the DMV brought in a specialist, weighed them, etc, but hesitated on registering them.  The submitter thought that maybe the plate was already registered, hence the issue. He ended up using another plate.

20 years???  No disrespect, but it is 35 years or older for NC.

Ohio is 25 years for Collector and 30 years for Historical.   Historical plates never have to be renewed.  That's how it was years ago anyway.  I still have a car here in Arizona with Historical Ohio plates, they don't use stickers and are registered to the car for a life time according to Ohio.  However AZ may not like that, lol.

Arizona is also 25 years and you can run a collector plate, which is called Antique I believe.  I used to run them but they charge an extra $15 over the regular plates every renewal, and they don't provide any significance at all, so I stopped using them.

As far as registering those custom made plates, Ohio didn't care as long as the numbers/letters weren't being used.  At the Columbus DMV they had a computer in the waiting room that you could run any sequence of numbers/letters for your county and see if it's been registered before you even ask about it.  Pretty cool I thought.   Dad ran the numbers, they weren't being used, so he had the plates made and brought them up there, they registered it no problem.

I bought a set from them for my 68 to duplicate the CT plates that my car wore its entire life.  The first set I got wasn't very good - the letters & numbers were perfect, but the border shape was way off and the color way way off as well.  This was even after supplying them with high-res pictures of my original vintage plates.  They gladly re-made the plates, but had me send them a color sample to ensure they got the color right.  The final set looks perfect, but they are a slightly thinner material than my originals.  You can tell if you handle the original & new plates side-by-side, but once on the car it isn't noticeable.

Back story:
CT DMV requires that you bring in the actual YOM plates that you want to use, which I did.  The plates had registration stickers on them dating from around 1973 back through 1965 (at least that's where I stopped trying to peel the reg stickers off).  The person at the counter used his phone to google what a 1968 CT plate should look like, and told me they weren't acceptable - they were too old (they had slots in them for back when the registration year indicators were metal tags).  So, even though they were THE ACTUAL license plates that the car wore its entire life, they weren't acceptable to the CT DMV.  Crazy.  Anyhow, the guy told me to just get a set of reproductions made.

You don't have to purchase the Classic Plates they sell.  I bought a set of unused original 1968 plates on eBay and had them registered as classic plates. I showed the plates to the clerks and they couldn't believe they were in such good shape.  They were also amazed there were still original unused plates for sale.  Supposedly they should have been destroyed in the next year (1969).

I have a matching pair of 1955 Alabama plates, never used, still in the plastic bags.  I bought them at a swap meet in the mid-70's...  I have no idea what the state(s) did, or were supposed to do, with unsold plates back then or now, but at that time Alabama's plates were made in the state prisons by prisoners.  But they stopped that some time back... (I suppose 'working' inmates came to be considered 'inhumane'?)
