1969 Camaro Indy Pace Car with 04L date code on trim tag.
« on: December 08, 2017, 08:11:08 PM »
Just thought I would post this in case anyone is interested.

I have heard of the 04L date code phenomenon, where it was theorized that the "E" on the dye may have broken and produced an "L" instead.  First, can anyone verify if this was the case or something else?  Finally, here is a pic of a trim tag showing the "04L" on the trim tag.  I never saw this before and thought it cool to finally see it.  So, here it is for other Camaro geeks like me who have never seen it before and want to.

No one knows what significance, if any, it might have. They could have just incremented to 04D. 04L appears about the same time as 05A, they were interspersed in production over a period of about 2 days. A few Firebirds were 04L. The 'broken die' theory seems far-fetched.

The body tag was only referenced by Fisher Body-Norwood assembly had no use for it. Fisher could have used 04L to signify a number of situations: a different process, orders to be expedited or delayed. I have compared the 60 or so 04L cars in the db and nothing jumps out. Maybe slightly odd, none are 6 cylinder.

Or, it was just an error and has no special meaning.

IMO, if an "E" die broke, I highly doubt the resulting "L" on the TT would have such sharp, continuous, and straight definition around all the edges.  Odds against that occurring would be astronomical.
