Help with Z/28 proof?
« on: October 19, 2017, 12:18:16 AM »
Ihave new piece of evidence maybe? Iwould like some expert opinions as to NCRS production date and how it correlated to delivery to the dealer.   as many of you know I have a 68 SS or Z/28, thats all i can prove, I have posted many pics on here of the correct Z intake, oil fill tube, oil cap, carb, exhaust manifolds, fan blade, distributor, rear end, firewall w/ muncie hole, 4 spd hole reinforcement plate, thermo housing, oil pan, dip stick, valve covers, DF rims etc etc...all dated before the manufacture date and by your opinions within the normal range for the cars date.  but the MO block and trans are not with the car.  a forum member saw some of my posts and sent me some original sale ads from Bill Conner Chevy Inc. the NCRS tells me thats where my car was shipped to. One of the ads is an Action sale ad thats for second week of August! my car was finished at GM on July 10th, the ad clearly shows a 68 Z/28 in British green for sale !! in my crazy mind that may very well be my car ???    anyone offer any info on time between completion to delivered?

Too bad they didn't use the last 4 of the VIN for the stock number. The dealer in Tucson didn't use the vin for the stock number either....Joe

It COULD be the car.

There were a lot of British Green Z28s built late in the 68 model year.

Yes unfortunate the stock number wasn’t part of the VIN. Some dealerships did that.

Yes it might as stated but no matter what it sure makes a neat thing to add to the car for conversation.

To look at another side of this it COULD be a Ralley Green car. Both teal blue and Ralley were spring additions and there's a teal blue car listed. Sure would be cool if this was yours.

Will the Indiana State DOT run the title history for you ? Some states still do, some don't, most redact the personal info of names and addresses, but could possibly still have dealer invoices and MSO's on file (like both my '68 and '69 Z's did). Worth a shot, anyway.

I have a postcard advertisement from my originating dealer dated '69 that shows a Le Mans Blue '69 in the showroom, often wondered like the thread above if it could possibly be mine in the shot. My MSO stated January 28th release date (01C build), car was sold in late February 1969, but unfortunately it is in the block of dates the NCRS can't locate; at least I have the dealer invoice and MSO for documentation. I don't reckon you can ever have enough, but it's good enough to verify what it is -

Steve

Z28z11, I have the indiana dmv number in my cell phone.... I asked if they could run an owner history and they said it was against federal law as of 1992 I think.  Your saying the might have paperwork at the dmv?

I've done that for years in Tennessee - in the old days, you could get every piece of paperwork that was on file by running a title history through the DOT (or DMV in you case). They charged $5.00 (now $15.00 last time I did it), and would dig out the pages from microfiche files, overnight. The Federal Privacy Law (which I think is what your people are referencing), prohibits the sharing of names and addresses by governmental agencies, which shouldn't affect most of the paperwork : Tennessee didn't start redacting the names until later. One of the cars I used this routine on (not mine), provided a big stack of the dealer invoice, MSO, title history with all of the past owner's info on it, which I sent to the current owner of the car after I tracked him down through the CRG (car was a local car sold out of state, disappeared for a couple of years until CRG helped me find where it went). My '68 Z came back as a 1/2" tall stack of copies, 13 owners in all (one guy bought and sold it 2 or 3 times), with the oh-so-critical dealer invoice and MSO perfectly legible and intact. '69 Z was the same, just not as thick as I'm the 3rd owner from 1973 'till present.

This whole thing was easy to do - required a visit to the TN DOT office in Nashville with the title in hand, fill out the title history request form, pay the fee, and come back the next day and pick up the results. If the car was originally from Tennessee, they had everything on file as I mentioned, but if it was a transfer the paperwork started when it was titled in TN.

Might be worth a trip to your state office (likely where the files are stored) in person - always easy for people over the phone to turn you down when they aren't sure of what they are talking about. Our office stopped doing this for a while, stating they didn't have the manpower of the overtime capabilities, but I heard recently they have started it again. It is worth a try -

Steve

Each state is different and there are wide variations in what they can give you.

Here in Maryland, about twelve years ago, I was able to a title file with all the personal info "blacked out". I was careful to be real nice to the MVA personnel as they seemed annoyed and confused by anything that didn't have a 17 digit VIN.

I've contacted indiana dmv by phone, by email, by a carefully crafted pre formatted letter from NCRS and have gotten absolutely nowhere. Its very frustrating to me that telemarketers have my landline and my cell and call me at all hours of the day and night at home or work. Equifax and exsperian etc etc have all my vital financial information and continually lose it, or get hacked then it's on me to buy freaking lifelong and jump through hoops to repair my credit????  But I can't know the history of me dang car, because that's an invasion of somebodies privacy!!!   Incredible world we live in

Indiana is the type of state where you have to go into the DMV to get things done. Luckily they hardly ever had long lines.
BUT I am from California and every person you have ever met or have yet to meet, is ahead of you in line out here. Even when you book an appointment, you are then in the "appointment line" ....what a joke. Still takes an hour with the appointment.
But there is a line that wraps around the building before they open, and without an appointment here it is about a 3-4 hour wait....
