69 rear defog
« on: November 25, 2016, 01:54:30 AM »
Was there any kind of mesh or padding sandwiched between the lower fan assembly and upper grille on a 1969 rear defogger? I ask because my car did NOT have anything other than the metal shelf structure that is part of the body. I just got a spare unit complete that has a wire mesh and white type padding and would like to know which is right?

here is what I mean. White appears to be asbestos? with wire mesh screen (2 different pieces).

Bentley,

First of all..  I have to admit I know *nothing* about rear defoggers.. :)..  BUT..  that white/wiremesh stuff you picture does NOT appear to be a factory part (to me)...

Wire mesh is not factory. Should have a grille a flat plate and metal main housing with motor made to it. Hope this helps!

Yes, I believe the one in my car has that flat plate, now that you mention it. This other one pictured, I will take apart and see if it has a plate too.

This mesh piece IS factory, just not sure it is out of a Camaro? That is why I asked? There are brass ferules where the studs on the outer cover pierce the mesh. My parcel shelf material was long gone when I got my car. I just thought a member may have pictures or knowledge of an untouched unit. JohnZ's car has an untouched defog, I know. My car's original defog is in tact and is all there, or at least I thought until this one surfaced. So, can anyone definitively say that the mesh was not on a 69 Camaro? I would hate to sell this and find out I should have kept the mesh piece, being correct? Just need 1 or 2 more confirmations and I will let it go when I sell. It may be part of (integral to) the rear shelf covering?

Bentley...  that 'white stuff'.... sorta appears to be asbestos based insulator material...  Is it?  I assume there's HEAT coming thru that vent to the rear window?  Is the mesh a support for the insulation material?

I tried to find your defogger unit in the AIM, but only found instructions for installing the switch to the dash.  Found nothing for the defogger unit itself, so it must have been installed by Fisher Body when C50 was elected?

We can add your questions to our 'How the hell did Fisher do it' list...  :)

That's a no.
I had a complete original unit - no mesh. None on any I've ever seen.

I agree with Kurt.

IMO, - The White Mesh was from big body cars like Impalas, Pontiacs, etc, no gen 1 Camaro  I have taken apart with a rear defroster "assembly line installed"  ever had them. They were a popular option in cold climates like Canada, seen quite a few over last 45 yrs !

The original owner to my cdn 69 L78 said dealer threw in the rear defogger in the deal.
